  • IPD-VIA Create: the cloud-ready application for editing
  • Kiloview: the first complete NDI-based OBV

Host: Maria Kholodova. Experts: Philip Grossman and Mary Seidler

Maria Kholdova: The IPD-VIA CREATE is a new web application that allows users of EVS and end-to-end production asset management (PAM) solutions, and MediaCeption signatures to access non-linear editing tools all within the same platform for faster operations. It was designed in collaboration with Blackbird, the developer of a cloud-native video editing platform, and can fully integrate into the EVS ecosystem, providing instant access to all content. So Philip, what does this mean for the industry?

Philip Grossman: Interestingly, EVS’s biggest competitor, Evertz has sort of been the 800-pound gorilla in the slow-motion instant replay world with their solution known as Dream Catcher. Evertz has a fully integrated Media and production assets management solution which brings a competitive advantage to the EVS platform. The good news is that it’s cloud-native so they partnered with Blackbird and since there are other users of Blackbird, this makes it fully integratable into larger solutions. It’s interesting to see the industry advancing from making specialized gears to making all-in-one solutions as we chart deeper into cloud technology. This trend will most likely help to assist the drive to more cloud-based implementations.

Maria Kholodova: Mary, I know you specialize in audio, but do you have any other commentary on that?

Mary Seidler: No, I agree with Philip that so many companies are getting into the cloud space either by collaborating with other companies or making everything themselves. And all the customers want is an ecosystem that works together.

Maria Kholodova: Moving to Kiloview, Kiloview has released the world’s first outside broadcast truck to be completely based on NDI workflows. It provides the ability to produce 20 channels of 4k video or 70 channels of HD video over a single Ethernet cable. While inside the truck, cable optimization is possible thanks to IP connectivity. Mary, I know that you are curious about this.

Mary Seidler: I’m super excited about anything with NDI. As someone who’s used NDI over SDI or anything else, it just makes my life easier with cable connections. I started wondering what this would mean for the people who make cables because certainly, they’ll need a lot less of them. And I was curious, Philip, what do you think about the march from SDI to NDI, am I being overly optimistic?

Philip Grossman: I’ve been a bit bearish on NDI especially before version 5, mainly because it didn’t have timing protocols, it was a compressed format, and it’s not an SMPTE standard so it’s not managed or maintained by an organization. But with the release of 5.1, they’ve got the timing protocols and there are more organizations building equipment that builds into it. As I mentioned earlier, as people move into the cloud, we’re seeing the Evertz, EVS, and Grass Valleys adopt NDI as the protocols within the cloud because they have to do it in a compressed format as the cloud infrastructure doesn’t yet support uncompressed multicast. So I’m becoming a bit more bullish on it and I like where NDI is going. I don’t think it will ever be the professional IP format, that’s always going to be uncompressed. You’ll always want to have the uncompressed SMPTE 2110. But this is going to allow for smaller productions, higher qualities, ease of use, and better global integration because NDI just has that compressed interface. I also like the fact that they were able to fit all of these into a tiny truck, especially with the 4k. I think 4k is where NDI would be able to put its stamp on things because of the compression. JPEG XS is coming, it’s an adopted standard that has been utilized within the 2110 protocol and it’s standard so I guess that would help as well. But it’s still not nearly the same level of compression where you’re doing 20 channels of it over typical Ethernet cabling. So, is it going to change the industry? No. Is it going to extend what we’re able to do? I think so. I think it’s really going to move the needle, especially in the collegiate Arena.

Maria Kholodova: Thank you all for your time. Don’t forget to comment on the news we discussed on all our social media platforms. We look forward to your contributions. See you on Monday at the same time.
