Maria: At IBC 2023, Rohde & Schwarz introduced transformative 5G Broadcast solutions, merging speed, security, and scalability. This marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of media distribution.
Philip, can you elaborate on what’s happening here?
Philip: It’s fascinating to observe not just a merger, but an overlay between 5G and Wi-Fi technologies. The 5G, especially with its millimeter-wave technology, offers incredible performance and low latency. It allows for deployments in places like stadiums, which contrasts with traditional Wi-Fi infrastructures. Companies are increasingly adopting this, partly because the cost of the technology has decreased. You no longer need a dedicated 5G cell tower; you can have your own 5G service using the same technology and even integrate it with existing 5G services for broadband outside the millimeter-wave spectrum. It’s always thrilling to see new network technologies emerge. Just when you think we’ve reached the pinnacle, something new surfaces. I believe, especially in live sports, this will introduce unique capabilities and features that we might not have previously encountered.
Maria: Mary, can you share your perspective on this?
Mary: My primary thought is about the codec manufacturers. How will they adapt and implement this, not just for audio codecs but also for video codecs? 5G indeed offers numerous benefits. Philip is spot on. With every generation, we think it’s the ultimate. We once thought 4G was all we’d ever need, but then 5G arrived. I’m eager to see what the future holds.
