Discussing the latest technological news with our respected experts – Philip Grossman and Mary Ann Seidler. Don’t forget to give the program a like!
Maria: Sony has launched the Sony’s HXC-FZ90 camera. It offers an affordable solution for 4K production, enabling seamless switching between 4K, HD, and HDR formats, with features including a 2/3″ 4K CMOS sensor, HLG and S-Log3 support. It is Ideal for studios, events, and sports.
Philip, tell me what you think about this?
Philip: It’s fascinating to observe the shift that has taken place in the past five to six years, where studio cameras now come as default 4K cameras. Although many facilities may not be shooting in 4K yet, this feature allows them to future-proof their camera systems when the infrastructure is ready. It’s almost ironic that we have a multitude of 4K cameras available, but there is still limited 4K distribution. Platforms like YouTube and OTT (over-the-top) services offer 4K content, but traditional cable and over-the-air broadcasting have yet to fully embrace 4K. Perhaps the availability of 4K cameras will help drive the adoption of 4K distribution in the future.

Maria: Moving on, Sphere Entertainment launches Sphere Studios, dedicated to immersive content creation. Its first innovation, Big Sky, is an ultra-high resolution camera system and sets new standards for image fidelity. With cutting-edge facilities and interdisciplinary experts, Sphere Studios redefines entertainment, combining visuals, sound, haptics, and environmental elements.
So Philip, what are your thoughts on this?
Philip: It’s interesting to see the rise of immersive entertainment. It offers a shared experience where everyone can enjoy it simultaneously. Currently, there are only a few locations, with Sphere and Las Vegas being among the first. Looking ahead, personal entertainment is also evolving with Apple’s recent announcement of the Vision Pro. Apple has a history of driving market trends; they did it with smartphones and tablets. It’ll be fascinating to see if they can do the same with personal immersive technology. While they’re not completely satisfied with the current underlying technology, this camera and Sphere’s efforts will contribute to its development. The transition from clunky three, four, or eight-camera arrays, which had limitations, to a compact, single piece of equipment will push the boundaries of what can be captured. The weight has already been reduced from 100 pounds to 60 pounds, and further reductions are expected. Personally, I’m curious to see the progress. Although I’m not sure if I’ll get a Vision Pro just yet, it’s definitely on my radar.
Maria: Great. Now moving on to Sennheiser. Sennheiser introduces TeamConnect Bar Solutions with built-in cameras for small and mid-sized collaboration spaces. These scalable, all-in-one conferencing devices offer easy setup, brand integration, high video quality, and flexibility.
Mary, I know that you are interested in this one.
Mary: Yes, this is one of those products that I would love to have if only I could figure out a justification for it. I believe it’s a brilliant product that addresses numerous issues in conference spaces. It’s an all-in-one solution and it even includes Dante, making it incredibly easy to connect with other devices. It’s interesting that Philip mentioned 4K cameras earlier, and this product also features a built-in 4K camera. I can definitely envision a future where Sennheiser adds new features to this as a foundation. It resolves many challenges in conference areas, eliminating the need to have an AV technologist on staff just to set things up. I truly believe this product is going to be a huge success.
Philip: It’s indeed interesting to see Sennheiser, a company traditionally known for audio products, entering this market. Are there specific features they’re focusing on with this product? Considering that audio is crucial for conference calls, it would be great to know if they are incorporating innovative audio solutions.
Mary: Absolutely. First and foremost, it’s Sennheiser we’re talking about. They have a reputation for delivering exceptional audio quality, much like Sony. I personally use Sennheiser microphones and headphones because their audio quality is outstanding. So, with this product, people can have confidence in its audio performance because it’s Sennheiser.
Philip: That’s fantastic. It’s definitely an intriguing product. As you mentioned, it’s one of those things that I wish I had a valid reason to purchase.
