Rohde & Schwarz offers 5G solutions

Maria: At IBC 2023, Rohde & Schwarz introduced transformative 5G Broadcast solutions, merging speed, security, and scalability. This marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of media distribution.

Philip, can you elaborate on what’s happening here?

Rohde & Schwarz offers 5G solutions

Philip: It’s fascinating to observe not just a merger, but an overlay between 5G and Wi-Fi technologies. The 5G, especially with its millimeter-wave technology, offers incredible performance and low latency. It allows for deployments in places like stadiums, which contrasts with traditional Wi-Fi infrastructures. Companies are increasingly adopting this, partly because the cost of the technology has decreased. You no longer need a dedicated 5G cell tower; you can have your own 5G service using the same technology and even integrate it with existing 5G services for broadband outside the millimeter-wave spectrum. It’s always thrilling to see new network technologies emerge. Just when you think we’ve reached the pinnacle, something new surfaces. I believe, especially in live sports, this will introduce unique capabilities and features that we might not have previously encountered.

Maria: Mary, can you share your perspective on this?

Mary: My primary thought is about the codec manufacturers. How will they adapt and implement this, not just for audio codecs but also for video codecs? 5G indeed offers numerous benefits. Philip is spot on. With every generation, we think it’s the ultimate. We once thought 4G was all we’d ever need, but then 5G arrived. I’m eager to see what the future holds.

ZEISS acquires Ncam Technologies

Maria: Global optics giant ZEISS has announced its acquisition of Ncam Technologies, a pioneer in camera tracking. This strategic decision highlights ZEISS’s dedication to leading the way in optics and optoelectronics advancements.

Philip, I believe this falls within your expertise. Can you shed some light on this?

ZEISS acquires Ncam Technologies

Philip: Certainly. From the ZEISS perspective, it’s intriguing. While ZEISS is renowned in the film industry primarily as a world-class lens manufacturer, they have a broader footprint in the tech sector. The fact that they’re acquiring Ncam, which was once a frontrunner in the VR domain, is quite noteworthy. I’m somewhat ambivalent about this move. It’s potentially exhilarating, considering they might integrate their globally acclaimed lenses with NCAM’s technology, which has been pivotal for virtualization, VR, and more aptly, augmented reality. This merger could elevate the technology from being perceived as a mere gimmick to a top-tier professional tool. I’m curious to see if they’ll also venture into the camera sector and possibly rival other major players. Panavision, for instance, produced both cameras and lenses. It’ll be interesting to see if ZEISS follows suit.

Glensound unveils enhanced Dante Solutions

Maria: Switching gears to audio news, at IBC 2023, Glensound unveiled advanced Dante products, with a special focus on the Charles Interpreter Unit. This groundbreaking device is set to revolutionize networked audio for interpretation. One of its standout features is its emphasis on redundancy, ensuring uninterrupted communication in crucial translation settings.

Mary, can you break this down for me?

Mary: Certainly. Glensound has a rich history and is known for its innovation. Typically, my encounters with them have been when they design a product tailored to a specific client’s needs, which speaks volumes about their approach to the Dante integration. Dante simplifies connectivity across devices, enabling various manufacturers to communicate seamlessly. This is in line with the AES 67 standard, which promotes interoperability between Dante, Live Wire, Ravenna, and others that adhere to this standard. It’s a game-changer for studio setups, making it incredibly convenient to have everything interconnected within a single system. That’s the direction Glensound is taking with Dante.

Maria: Philip, do you have any insights to share?

Glensound unveils enhanced Dante Solutions

Philip: I’m curious if this focus on translation might be hinting at a larger integration of AI. With AI becoming increasingly pivotal, could this lead to more advanced multi-language AI-driven translations in audio? The idea of connecting this technology to computers, potentially bypassing the need for human translators, is intriguing. I’m eager to see the trajectory this takes.

Maria: That’s all the time we have today. Many thanks to our experts – Philip and Mary! And don’t forget to comment on the news we’ve discussed. See you next Monday at the same time! Goodbye!
