Mark: Philip, first of all, what a hectic two weeks! So many different events going on and a lot of different shows happening. I wanted to start off with one of the coolest shows I’ve witnessed in the last year or two — Cine Gear in Atlanta. What was your experience like? It was great to see you out there, have coffee, and join you for meetings. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the convention.
Philip: Cine Gear is a unique event. Typically, it’s West Coast-based, with the big one happening at Paramount Studios. It’s been running for years, usually at the end of May or beginning of June. They’ve started doing it on the East Coast, and I think it was right before or just after the pandemic that they had their first or second one. It’s really specific to the film world. If you look at who’s displaying in the booths, a lot of it is very film-related — you’ll see tripods, lighting gear, gaffer gear, grip equipment. It’s really interesting, and I always enjoy that part of the industry because it’s so creative.
Filmmaking Breakthroughs at Trilith Studios: TFT1957 Reports from Cine Gear Expo
It’s good to see the event growing in size. They’ve moved it to larger studio spaces at Trilith Studios, the former Pinewood Studios here in Atlanta. It’s always great to visit my friends in the industry who work in both film and television, especially my friends in lighting, which is my background as well. I’m glad to see the event continuing to grow. They’re hosting more classes and more seminar-type sessions.
Will it ever be the same size as the LA event? Probably not, since the film world is still largely based in LA. But with the amount of production happening in Atlanta, I think last year Atlanta was the number one location for film work. The industry here just continues to grow, and I’m excited to see it adding more and more vendors to the list.
Mark: Fantastic, and off to New York for the NAB Show. The show in New York was a very interesting experience, I’d say, for all of us, especially for our European team. They came out and had their first experience at that show specifically, even though we’ve been attending the NAB Show in Las Vegas for over 20 years. I wanted to ask you a question based on that—what did you think of the convention, the expo that NAB hosted in New York under, as I’m sure everybody is aware, new management? Additionally, what are your thoughts on the convention itself, the concept behind it? You know, everyone knows that just like Cine Gear has its larger convention, the scale of NAB Show in Las Vegas is nowhere near the size of the New York show. It’s way smaller, more intimate, and I wanted to ask you, as an expert, why is that?
Philip: Yeah, so, you know, the NAB Show in Las Vegas is all about film and television, and it’s just massive—so many people there. The New York show is actually a sort of transition. I think it used to be called the Cable and Satellite Show, or CCE, or something. I forget the original name of it. And of course, NAB bought it, and it’s grown over time. They started producing really interesting shows around 2015 or 2016, and then the pandemic hit, and they scaled it down.
Now, the nice thing this year is seeing that it’s still growing. You know, the first one after the pandemic was a little smaller, last year was bigger than that, and this year wasn’t quite the same size as pre-pandemic shows, but it’s getting there. One of the reasons is that not everybody can get up and go to Las Vegas for three or four days in the desert, so this gives people on the East Coast an opportunity to see the vendors and talk to industry professionals. It’s nicely timed after IBC. The running joke is you announce at IBC and release at NAB, or announce at NAB and release at IBC, and now there’s this middle show in New York.
As much as people want to say we don’t need big conferences anymore, there’s no way I could sit down and talk to all the vendors I need to talk to, and all the contacts I need, in one or two days remotely. So, there’s still value in these events. It’s nice to see that NAB East has leveled the playing field a bit. The larger manufacturers used to have giant booths, and now everyone has more modestly sized booths. The 10×20 or 10×10 booths are more than enough to talk and meet with customers and vendors.
We’re also seeing more smaller vendors showing up, which is one of the benefits of NAB New York. They can’t afford to exhibit at Las Vegas, but they can manage a smaller booth in New York. So, I think it’s wonderful, and I look forward to it every year.
Mark: Awesome! And we have one question for the audience—please answer in the comments: What is your favorite industry convention and why? Outside of that, we appreciate you, Philip, and we’re looking forward to the future. Keep broadcasting!
