ARRI has launched the Software Update Package (SUP) 1.3 for the ALEXA 35, which includes a new 3.8K 16:9 recording format, enhanced monitoring options including playback support for headphones with the AEM-1, additional lens user buttons, Wi-Fi improvements, and metadata enhancements.
New Recording Format: ProRes 3.8K 16:9
The 3.8K 16:9 recording format, previously available only in ARRIRAW, is now accessible in ProRes. This format is ideal for projects using spherical lenses aiming for a 16:9 deliverable with 4K UHD resolution (3840 x 2160). It allows for the lowest possible data rate in ProRes while meeting 4K UHD requirements. The smaller sensor area ensures that the illumination circle of most Super 35 format lenses covers the format.
AEM-1 Output and Playback Monitoring
SUP 1.3.0, in conjunction with AEM-1 V1.1G, introduces the ability to monitor the inputs as they are routed and recorded in the system. Users can now monitor the recorded sound during playback from the headphone jack of the AEM-1. The AEM-1 must be updated to software V1.1G for these features to work.
Improvements to Dynamic Metadata
Previously, ARRI MXF Library used static metadata for fps and shutter angles, masking non-standard values. SUP 1.3.0 ensures dynamic metadata accurately represents fps and shutter angle values.
Wi-Fi Enhancements
ARRI has improved the Wi-Fi performance and stability by implementing a more up-to-date software stack, addressing previous issues reported by users.
Additional Lens User Buttons for ENG-style Lenses
A new Lens Buttons menu supports ENG-style lenses with multiple user buttons. The available buttons can now be assigned, including Lens RET1, RET2, RET3, RET4, ENG, PROD, and VTR.
EBU R095 Frame Line
SUP 1.3.0 adds the EBU R095 frame line to the camera’s frame line default list for 16:9 sensor modes. It includes two safe areas as frame line A and B, with action safe area at 3.5% and graphics safe area at 5%, adjustable in a Multicam environment.
Bugfixes and Stability Improvements
The override on a Master Grip is maintained if the Hi-5 loses and re-establishes connection.
Scale factors are now calculated individually for each frame line A/B/C.
The Rec/Info section of the Webremote accurately represents a two-letter camera index.
Switching from LDS to an LDA table no longer changes the iris limit.
Occasional flickering in the MVF-2 OLED’s first two lines is resolved.
ECS devices can now start/stop recording during active playback.
Headphone monitoring has audio even if both channels are set to “Internal Mic L”.
Changing shutter or fps values no longer triggers a temporary incorrect temperature warning.
Return In displays the correct image in Open Gate Sensor modes.
Clip recovery from a power loss during recording is improved.
The side display backlight now turns off 3 seconds after being sent to sleep instead of 40.
This update enhances the functionality and reliability of the ARRI ALEXA 35, meeting the evolving needs of users.
