ARRI announces a new license-based OpenFX plugin, ARRI Film Lab, for postproduction software tools.
The plugin enriches digital images with the look and feel of analog film. ARRI Film Lab uses the company’s expertise to provide creative control over grain, color, halation, and gate weave associated with analog film stocks and processes. The plugin is compatible with RGB images from any camera processed in an ARRI pipeline. On-set preview capabilities in the latest ARRI cameras will be added soon.
Technology Background
Built on ARRI’s history of film and digital image processing—from ARRILASER and ARRISCAN to REVEAL Color Science—ARRI Film Lab translates decades of research into a real-time plugin for postproduction tools. It can be used for movies, streaming series, commercials, corporate projects, or indie productions.
Analog Film Features
ARRI Film Lab includes adjustable settings that replicate key characteristics of traditional photochemical film processing:
-
Grain: 50D, 200T, or 500T negative stock equivalents
-
Color: Different print stocks and processes, including reversal and bleach bypass
-
Halation: Red/orange halo around highlights and high-contrast edges
-
Gate weave: Simulates slight unsteadiness seen in film footage
All combinations of these settings produce an authentic analog feel while respecting LUTs or color grades already applied.
Compatibility
The plugin supports major color grading platforms including Resolve, Baselight, and Nuke. It provides real-time 4K processing for ARRI and third-party cameras and supports LogC3 (AWG3) and LogC4 (AWG4) workflows. Acquisition formats supported include ARRICORE, ARRIRAW, ProRes, and third-party codecs. ACES 2.0 support is planned for future updates.
On-Set Preview
After a camera firmware update, ARRI Film Lab previews will be available in-camera on ALEXA 35 Xtreme and ALEXA 35 cameras. Non-destructive simulations of the desired film look use ARRI Textures and 3D LUTs, showing intended grain and color in viewfinders and monitors. No additional hardware is required. Postproduction adds more control over grain, halation, and gate weave.
ARRI Look Library Integration
ARRI Film Lab includes a plugin version of the ARRI Look Library, allowing access to a wide range of LUTs directly in the plugin. The LUTs are designed for different production environments and project types.
Licensing and Availability
ARRI Film Lab is available now via RE:Vision Effects. A one-week free trial is offered. Licenses for individuals are available monthly, annually, or permanently. Company licenses depend on the number of users, with special rates for educational purposes. The on-set preview function will be enabled in a Q1 2026 camera software update.
