Third Support System for ALEXA 35

The Operator Set is the third support system ARRI has developed for the ALEXA 35. It follows the Production Set, which is tailored for traditional on-set use, and the Lightweight Set, intended for super lightweight applications. The Operator Set was created after ARRI’s evaluation of their expansion into live entertainment shooting, driven by feedback from clients like NFL Films. NFL Films had requested a system to facilitate a transition from the AMIRA to the ALEXA 35, leading to the development of the Operator Set, which includes a newly designed tripod mounting system.

Touchdown Tripod Mount System

The Touchdown system is comprised of the TBP-1 baseplate and the TRP-1 receiver plate. ARRI claims that this system provides a faster and more secure mounting solution compared to the traditional VCT-14, reducing any movement or instability during use. The TBP-1 baseplate features a self-aligning design and a side lever lock for quick and secure camera attachment to a tripod. It also includes rosettes for handgrips and a 15mm LWS rod bracket for additional accessories. A long shoulder pad is included to help balance the camera when carried.

The TRP-1 receiver plate allows for smooth transitions between tripod and handheld setups. It is made from stainless steel, features rubber pads for stability, and offers multiple tripod thread options. The plate’s tension can be adjusted using a screw on the back.

Top Operator Plate and Grip

The Operator Set also includes the TOP-1 Operator Top Plate and the TOG-1 Top Operator Grip. The TOP-1 is designed to fit the camera’s form factor and is attached to the camera body with five screws. It features a 15mm LWS rod bracket and multiple mounting threads (3/8″-16, 1/4″-20, and M4). The TOG-1 Top Operator Grip, equipped with a walnut handle, slides into the top unit and locks in place with a side lever. It includes multiple accessory mounting holes along the top and front.

The ARRI Operator Set is priced at $4,040. The components can also be purchased individually. The Touchdown system is compatible with the ALEXA Mini and ALEXA Mini LF when used with the Balance Utility Dovetail (BUD-3).
