Atomos Ninja Phone Begins Shipping June 2024; Priced at $399

Atomos has introduced a groundbreaking device called the Ninja Phone, which acts as a 10-bit video co-processor for smartphones and tablets.

This innovation allows users to record high-quality video from professional HDMI cameras directly onto their mobile devices.

Compatibility and Features

The Ninja Phone is specifically designed to be compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It transforms these smartphones into professional monitor-recorders, enabling them to capture 10-bit ProRes or H.265 video from any professional camera with an HDMI output. However, it’s important to note that the device supports video inputs and recordings at 1080p and 720p resolutions, but does not support 4K.

Technical Specifications

The device utilizes Atomos’ AtomIC 5 silicon, facilitating low power consumption and silent operation while encoding video in formats like ProRes HQ and various H.265 and H.264 types. The encoded video is transferred to the iPhone via a USB-C connection, and the iPhone’s A17 chip is responsible for decoding and displaying the video with no latency. The Ninja Phone also enables direct video storage on the iPhone in .mov format and supports live streaming and cloud-based workflows via the iPhone’s 5G and Wi-Fi 6E capabilities.

Display Advantages

Using an iPhone as a display for the Ninja Phone is advantageous due to the high-quality screen of the iPhone 15 Pro models, which boast a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG, and a peak brightness of 1600 nits.

Software and Handling

The operation of the Ninja Phone is managed through a dedicated iPhone app available in the App Store. This app facilitates video mode adjustments for different social media platforms and ensures compatibility with both iOS and iPadOS.

Design and Integration

Weighing just 95g on its own and 335g when attached to an iPhone 15 Pro, the Ninja Phone is designed in two parts: the video co-processor and a specialized case that secures it to the iPhone. This design allows for the use of future iPhone models by simply replacing the case. The device also integrates a USB-C hub to accommodate professional accessories like wireless microphones.

Power and Connectivity

The Ninja Phone can be powered by NP series batteries, a battery eliminator, or a USB-C input. It also charges the connected iPhone during use. The device uses a locking system for HDMI and USB-C cables to prevent disconnections, though standard cables can also be used.

Cloud Services and Pricing

Atomos’ Cloud Services enhance the Ninja Phone’s functionality by enabling efficient video publishing and remote production workflows. The device is priced at USD/EUR 399, with separate cases available for USD/EUR 59. It is expected to start shipping in June 2024.

The Ninja Phone by Atomos is a significant addition for filmmakers, combining professional recording capabilities with the advanced display and connectivity options of the iPhone 15 Pro models.
