Atomos has launched the second iteration of their Shinobi 5-inch HDMI monitor.
CEO Jeromy Young announced that the Shinobi II has been completely redesigned, offering a brighter display and camera control in a slimmer package. The device is now available for $349.
Background
The original Atomos Shinobi, released in early 2019, became a popular on-camera monitoring solution for videographers and content creators using mirrorless or small cinema cameras. It was Atomos’ first monitor-only device, complementing their Ninja and Shogun monitor-recorders.
New Features and Improvements
The Atomos Shinobi II maintains a 5.2-inch 1920×1080 touchscreen display but now boasts a maximum brightness of 1,500 cd/m2, a 50% improvement over the original. The device features a single HDMI input supporting 4K video signals at up to 30fps, with the HDMI port now located at the back. The monitor includes a Sony NP-F battery slot and a new USB-C port for power delivery and camera control.

Camera Control Capabilities
The USB-C port on the Shinobi II allows for camera control, supporting popular Canon, Panasonic, and Sony mirrorless cameras, as well as Z CAM E2 bodies with an optional serial cable. Future firmware updates will add support for FUJIFILM, Nikon, OM System, and SIGMA cameras. The camera control UI provides access to settings such as iris, shutter speed/angle, ISO, white balance, and run/stop, along with standard monitoring tools like histogram, false color, zebra, focus peaking, and zoom.

Design and Build
The Shinobi II’s design remains similar to the original but is now 10.7mm thinner (151 x 91.5 x 20.8mm) and slightly heavier at 210g. It includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, LANC remote interface, and an SD card slot for LUT loading and firmware updates. The HDMI and USB-C ports now feature locking connectors. Notably, the top 1/4”-20 mounting point present in the original Shinobi is absent in the Shinobi II, limiting mounting flexibility.
