Hedge, the creators of Offshoot, have announced a new collaborative workflow designed for AVID editors.
This innovative solution combines the iodyne Pro Data Thunderbolt storage device with Hedge’s newly acquired Mimiq Pro software, offering a cost-effective alternative to AVID’s expensive ISIS shared storage.
Bin Locking Technology
Bin locking technology, traditionally used with AVID’s ISIS or NEXIS shared storage, prevents editors from overwriting each other’s work. However, these proprietary storage solutions are costly in terms of both hardware and service agreements. Hedge’s Mimiq Pro software now provides bin locking capabilities for AVID editors working on generic network-attached storage. The iodyne Pro Data NVMe storage is optimized to work seamlessly with Hedge’s software, enabling AVID users to access high-performance shared storage at a lower cost.
Hedge’s Product Evolution
Hedge has established itself with the offloading utility “Offshoot,” formerly known as “Hedge.” The company retained the name Hedge for itself and rebranded the software to Offshoot. Over time, Hedge expanded its software portfolio with products like Postlab, which focuses on collaborative editing solutions for Final Cut Pro and Premiere editors. The acquisition of Mimiq in 2022 further extended Hedge’s capabilities in collaborative editing.
Enhanced AVID Collaboration

Hedge has improved Mimiq to support Apple silicon, in addition to Intel-based Macs. Additionally, Offshoot has been optimized to work with the iodyne Pro Data drive, which offers eight Thunderbolt ports, enabling multiple editors to connect simultaneously. By connecting two Thunderbolt cables from a MacBook Pro to the iodyne Pro Data, users can double the IO bandwidth. The iodyne Pro Data offers storage configurations ranging from 12TB to 144TB of NVMe storage, with recommendations for single-user, multi-user, and network connectivity scenarios.
Versatile Storage Solutions
The iodyne Pro Data pairs effectively with a Mac mini, transforming it into a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. It can function as both direct-attached storage and a NAS simultaneously. This configuration allows for high-speed direct connections via Thunderbolt and network connections through high-speed Ethernet. For instance, a Mac mini connected to a 10G Ethernet switch can serve multiple editing stations using 10G Ethernet adapters over Cat 6e cables. For maximum performance, a Mac can also be connected via Thunderbolt, offering a unique and flexible storage solution.
Compatibility with NLE Applications
The iodyne Pro Data is compatible with any Non-Linear Editing (NLE) application. For users of Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro, Hedge’s Postlab can facilitate project sharing. Postlab 2, currently in beta, is set to support additional applications.
