Backlight integrates ftrack Studio with Adobe Photoshop

Backlight, a leading global media and tech firm renowned for pioneering software solutions in media and entertainment, unveiled a groundbreaking integration between its award-winning collaboration platform, ftrack Studio, and Adobe Photoshop.

BOSTON, April 11, 2024

This integration, powered by the enhanced ftrack Framework, is engineered to streamline and enhance creative workflows for engineers in the broadcast industry.

The ftrack Studio and Adobe Photoshop Integration

Ftrack Studio is a collaboration powerhouse tailored for engineering teams tackling intricate, high-volume projects. Through secure, cloud-based project management, ftrack Studio provides a unified hub for teams to coordinate tasks, review media, and oversee workflows.

Now, with the latest integration with Adobe Photoshop, ftrack’s project management capabilities seamlessly merge with creative workflows in Photoshop.

Key Benefits of the Integration:
  1. Task-oriented work: Launch Photoshop directly into the relevant task effortlessly via Connect or the studio web interface.
  2. Dedicated ftrack panel: Access publish and open functionalities within Photoshop via the panel.
  3. Streamlined publishing and versioning: Effortlessly publish new asset versions to ftrack Studio from Photoshop, facilitating review and collaboration without leaving the creative environment.
  4. Iterative workflow: Utilize the framework opener UI to locate previously published files, address feedback, and republish for further iteration.

When publishing Adobe Photoshop files into ftrack Studio for review and production tracking, engineers can opt to publish the initial version of the asset or create a new version if it’s already part of an existing asset in an ftrack Studio project.

The following elements will be tracked within ftrack Studio:
  • The Snapshot (the Photoshop file)
  • Image (the visible canvas image at publish time)
  • Thumbnail displayed within Studio
  • Reviewable image for feedback in review sessions

In the Photoshop Panel, the framework Open UI empowers users to select versions for opening, providing a thumbnail for identification, along with information on the publisher and publication time. Users can seamlessly switch tasks within the Photoshop application without disruption.

A New ftrack Framework

The new integration builds upon the recently introduced ftrack Framework—a suite of tools for crafting custom integrations. While ftrack Studio has long offered an Adobe Photoshop integration, the new Framework enhances adaptability, flexibility, and potency.

Engineered with flexibility at its core, the new Framework ensures seamless integration with various digital content creation tools. Engineers can leverage familiar software while keeping production workflows intact, enhancing creativity, streamlining production, and ensuring excellence—all within budget and schedule.

The framework’s power lies in its adaptability and customization potential to meet specific pipeline requirements. Whether exporting assets from Photoshop to another tool or importing data for use within Photoshop, the framework can be tailored to boost efficiency and creativity, providing a personalized experience.

Customization and personalization require Python programming knowledge. Backlight’s developer hub offers comprehensive guidance on starting and extending ftrack’s functionality beyond its default capabilities.

In addition to the Photoshop integration, Backlight announces forthcoming integrations with Autodesk Maya and The Foundry’s Nuke, further enhancing collaborative workflows for engineers in the broadcast industry.
