Blackmagic Camera 8.5 Beta Update: Essential Features and System Requirements

The Blackmagic Camera Software Installation Guide provides comprehensive instructions for installing the Blackmagic Camera Setup on a user’s system. This software is crucial for updating and managing Blackmagic Cameras.

The package comprises a variety of tools, including the Blackmagic RAW Player, Blackmagic RAW Speed Test, Blackmagic RAW SDK, and Blackmagic RAW plugins.

When updating Blackmagic Cameras, especially for users with Camera 4.0 or later versions, it’s important to export presets and LUTs onto a memory card before proceeding with the update. This step is vital because these settings will be removed during the update process, and exporting them ensures they can be restored afterwards.

What’s New in Blackmagic Camera 8.5 Beta

  • Blackmagic URSA Broadcast G2: This update includes several enhancements such as reduced SDI output latency, a new media pool file browser, and Blackmagic Cloud clip uploads. It also introduces direct uploads to DaVinci Resolve projects, proxy recording for Blackmagic RAW and ProRes formats, and the Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) streaming protocol. The update adds the ability to manage the camera via ethernet, a REST control API for remote control, login and secure certificate support, network time protocol support, web media manager, file transfer protocol support, and selective tally color setting. It also supports SMB file sharing and has improved lens compatibility.
  • Blackmagic URSA Studio Viewfinder G2: The ISO tally color has been changed from orange to yellow.

Known Limitations and Issues in 8.5 Beta

  • Proxy Recording Limitations: Proxy recording is limited to Blackmagic RAW or ProRes. Off-speed proxy recordings play at the project rate in Resolve 18.6.4 and need to be regenerated for correct off-speed rates. Timelapse recordings don’t have proxy files and require manual generation in DaVinci Resolve. Dual card clips will have issues with cloud uploads and playback unless specific settings are used.
  • Streaming Considerations: Streaming to YouTube SRT (Beta) requires manual XML configuration for passwords. Cloud uploads will pause during streaming.
  • Technical Issues: There are AV sync issues on SDI outputs with certain record formats, and pixel recalibration fails at frame rates other than 24 and 23.98fps.

Minimum System Requirements

  • For Mac OS Users: macOS 13.0 Ventura or later, macOS 14.0 Sonoma or later.
  • For Windows Users: Windows 10 64-bit or later, Windows 11 64-bit or later.
