Blackmagic Design: New Blackmagic Cloud Live Sync Feature

Blackmagic Design has launched a new feature called Blackmagic Cloud Live Sync.

This addition to Blackmagic Cloud storage allows users to sync media directly into a DaVinci Resolve bin during recording. This enables editors and colorists to begin their work while the camera is still rolling.

Background and Benefits

When Blackmagic Cloud was first introduced by Blackmagic Design in 2022, DaVinci Resolve included the ability to log into the cloud storage service and store project files in the cloud instead of a local drive. The new Cloud Live Sync feature now allows users to access clips immediately and start editing and grading while recording is still ongoing, significantly speeding up the workflow.

Real-Time Production and Post-Production Connection

With this new feature, postproduction professionals can access and start working with the media from any location while the shooting is still happening. Blackmagic Cloud Live Sync utilizes the ability to record full-resolution HD proxy files in H.264 format. Cameras such as the Cinema Camera 6K, PYXIS, URSA Cine, and URSA Broadcast G2 support this feature, allowing files to live sync to Blackmagic Cloud as they are recorded. These files are then also synced to the DaVinci Resolve workstations connected to the cloud project. The connection is automatic, simplifying the process.

Camera and Workflow Integration

The process on the camera is straightforward: the user logs into Blackmagic Cloud and selects a DaVinci Resolve project before recording. Once recording starts, the media is live synced to all connected DaVinci Resolve workstations. In multi-camera setups, the new multi-sync feature displays all cameras in a multi-view.

Practical Applications

This feature is beneficial in various scenarios. For instance, in a production where shooting occurs in one location and color grading is done simultaneously in another, the results can be viewed on location as soon as the recording stops. In news workflows, events can be recorded, edited, and aired almost immediately.

CEO Statement

Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design, stated, “Live syncing media from our cameras directly into DaVinci Resolve bins is a workflow revolution. This has never been possible before. It’s like live streaming into the DaVinci Resolve bin, even with multiple DaVinci Resolve systems collaborating via the same Blackmagic Cloud project. This is very exciting and looks amazing when seen live.”
