Blackmagic Design Debuts URSA Cine 12K and 17K Cameras Starting at $14,995

Blackmagic Design has recently introduced two groundbreaking cameras, the URSA Cine and the URSA Cine 17K, at a launch event hosted by company CEO Grant Petty.

Petty’s initial remarks hinted at an unconstrained approach to camera development, focusing on quality without the typical cost limitations, which set the stage for a surprising price announcement: the URSA Cine will be sold for $14,995 USD and is slated to begin shipping this month.

URSA Cine Detailed Features

The URSA Cine camera features a large format 12K sensor that supports 16 stops of dynamic range. It offers high-resolution recording in Blackmagic Raw format up to 12K resolution in a 3:2 open gate configuration. For live production environments, the camera includes streaming capabilities over RTMP/SRT via Wi-Fi, RJ45, and USB-C interfaces. It has a built-in monitor that folds out and is clearly visible under bright conditions with a luminance of 1500 cd/m². Connectivity options are comprehensive, including 12G-SDI outputs and USB-C expansion ports. Additionally, it incorporates timecode/REF inputs, LEMO/Fischer control ports, and two balanced 3-pin XLR audio inputs. The camera is equipped with built-in IRND filters at multiple stops and offers an optional electronic viewfinder and top handle.

Introduction of the URSA Cine 17K

The presentation also previewed the URSA Cine 17K, which includes an even larger 65mm sensor, boasting dimensions of 50.80mm by 23.32mm and a resolution of 15,520 x 8,040 pixels. Similar in physical design to the 12K model, the 17K variant offers enhanced imaging capabilities with a promise of future availability by the end of the year, although the exact price is not set, it is estimated to fall between $20,000 to $25,000 USD.

Design and Build Quality

Both models share a robust construction suited to demanding production conditions, with a chassis made of magnesium alloy and a skin of lightweight carbon fiber polycarbonate composite. The cameras feature versatile lens mount options, including PL, LPL, EF, and Hasselblad, adaptable to various filming requirements. The ergonomic design includes soft touch backlit buttons and a dual monitoring system that facilitates on-set adjustments.

Recording Capabilities and Media Management

The URSA Cine offers diverse recording resolutions and frame rates across 4K, 8K, and 12K formats. It is capable of recording high frame rates, including 100 fps at full 12K resolution and up to 224 fps in 8K widescreen. The included Blackmagic Media Module 8TB allows for extensive internal storage, capable of recording over four hours of 12K Blackmagic RAW or twenty hours of 4K footage. Users may purchase additional storage modules and the camera supports a new Cloud Store technology for seamless media management and synchronization.

Advanced Imaging and Filtration Technology

The camera incorporates Blackmagic’s Generation 5 Color Science, which optimizes color rendering for realistic skin tones and vivid colors in complex scenes. An optical low pass filter (OLPF) is utilized to minimize moiré and aliasing effects, essential for maintaining image clarity with modern high-resolution lenses. Additionally, the URSA Cine includes precision-matched color balanced ND filters that maintain image color integrity while reducing light intake as needed.

Operational Efficiency and Connectivity

The URSA Cine is designed for efficiency with an intuitive operating system that simplifies access to camera functions and settings through a touchscreen interface. The system is engineered for stability and quick interaction, crucial in professional settings. Connectivity options are extensive, providing high-speed network connections for on-set media sync and remote operation capabilities.

Price and Additional Offers

The URSA Cine 12K camera is priced at $14,995 USD, with the optional EVF top handle kit available for an additional $1,500. The price for the URSA Cine 17K will be announced closer to its release date.

Blackmagic Design’s new URSA Cine cameras represent a significant advancement in digital film technology, offering professional filmmakers high-performance tools at competitive prices. These cameras promise to enhance the filmmaking process with their robust build, advanced imaging capabilities, and comprehensive connectivity options.
