BLAZAR Unveils Remus 35mm

BLAZAR, a Chinese lens maker previously known as Great Joy, has recently revealed plans to expand its Remus 1.5x anamorphic lens lineup.

The new addition, the BLAZAR Remus 35mm T1.6 1.5x, is distinct from the current full-frame models in the series as it is specifically designed for Super35 mm sensors.

BLAZAR’s Journey in Anamorphic Lens Production

Starting its journey in 2021 with the announcement of the Great Joy 60mm T2.9 1.33x full-frame anamorphic prime, BLAZAR then introduced a set of T2.9 1.8x full-frame anamorphic lenses in three focal lengths (35mm, 50mm, 85mm). The company gained significant attention with the launch of the Remus 1.5x series, targeting independent filmmakers with its vintage look, compact size (less than 110mm in length), light weight (under 790g), and affordability (a 3-lens set priced at $2,799).

Details on the New Remus 35mm T1.6 Lens

The Remus 1.5x anamorphic series currently includes 45mm T2, 65mm T2, and 100mm T2.8 lenses, all compatible with full-frame sensors, even in 3:2 Open Gate mode. The upcoming 35mm lens, however, will cater exclusively to Super35 mm sensor cameras, such as the RED KOMODO/KOMODO-X or Sony FX30, and will not be suitable for full-frame sensor users.

Despite this limitation, BLAZAR hints at more announcements to come at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, scheduled for April 13-17, 2024, sparking curiosity about further expansions or additions to their product line.

The 35mm lens will feature a maximum aperture of T1.6, making it faster than its full-frame counterparts. While full specifications have yet to be released, it is expected to share similar features with the full-frame models, such as a 77mm front filter thread, an 80mm front diameter, a user-interchangeable PL/EF mount, and options for blue/amber flares.

Pricing and Availability

No official information has been provided regarding the pricing or availability of the BLAZAR Remus 35mm T1.6 1.5x anamorphic prime. The current lenses in the series are priced at $999 each, or $2,799 for a three-lens kit, which may give some indication as to the new lens’s market positioning.
