Broadcasting Center Europe (BCE) successfully served as the official host broadcaster for the 2024 Škoda Tour de Luxembourg.
This event, part of the UCI Pro Series, featured five stages of intense cycling competition, showcasing Luxembourg’s scenic landscapes. BCE’s technical expertise enabled a smooth broadcast across various platforms, including Eurosport and RTL Lëtzebuerg.
Technical Solution for Stage 1
The first stage, ending at the Fëschmaart area in Luxembourg City, presented challenges due to the narrow streets near the finish line. BCE addressed this by implementing a fiber-optic solution connecting cameras directly to the OB Vans. This setup ensured reliable live coverage, despite the difficult layout of the area.
Production and Transmission Setup
Throughout the event, BCE utilized advanced production tools, including:
Four HF motorbikes capturing footage from within the race.
A helicopter delivering aerial views of the cyclists and the surrounding landscapes.
A collaborative effort with NEP to transmit feeds from the motorbikes and helicopter to an airplane, which relayed the signals to ground antennas and then to the OB Vans.
Depending on the stage, between five and seven cameras were positioned at the finish lines, following the guidelines of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). A graphics team provided real-time race information and standings.
Global Broadcast and Streaming
The live production was managed in BCE’s OB Vans and broadcast on RTL Tele Lëtzebuerg, with global distribution via satellite to Eurosport. Additionally, local fans had access to live streaming on the RTL Lëtzebuerg website, allowing viewers worldwide to follow the event in real time.
Event Summary
The 2024 Škoda Tour de Luxembourg featured a 707 km course over five stages, testing the cyclists through challenging climbs, sprint finishes, and a time trial. BCE’s efficient production ensured comprehensive coverage of the event, delivering high-quality broadcasts globally.
Xavier Thillen, Head of Production and Digital Media Operations at BCE, commented on the event’s success, noting the complexity of covering such a fast-paced race and the team’s commitment to delivering quality broadcasts.
