This significant upgrade marks a technological advancement for the network, which operates 15 local stations across Canada and provides news, weather, and information through 11 different platforms, including the Global TV App, Pluto TV, Samsung, LG, and Roku. The integration was facilitated by Calrec’s Canadian partner, True North A.V.
Enhancing Production Capabilities
Ralph Carstens, Systems Specialist, Audio at Global News, highlighted the benefits of the new consoles: “The Type R consoles replace our old Calrec Omega desks, which we used for 15 years. The Type R consoles offer remote access, flexibility in I/O integration, and improved audio quality.” The new consoles are a mix of software and hardware control surfaces, contributing to better production outcomes.

Facility-Specific Installations
In Calgary, the facility now includes one six-fader panel and one large soft panel. Edmonton’s facility features five six-fader panels and two large soft panels, while Vancouver has six six-fader panels and three large soft panels. These cores are controlled locally and can be adjusted remotely using VPN and the Calrec Assist GUI. The integration with Viz Mosart automation allows for streamlined news production across all three locations.
Project Execution and Support
Carstens praised True North A.V. for their expertise and responsiveness: “True North is incredibly knowledgeable about Type R, and their response time was phenomenal.” Kypros Christodoulides, Calrec Product Specialist at True North, noted that this project was their first application of Type R consoles in a live TV environment, and it was completed smoothly and efficiently.
Successful Collaboration
Dave Letson, Vice President of Sales at Calrec, emphasized the successful collaboration: “True North understood exactly what was required and provided the support that helped drive the project for Global News.” The integration of Type R consoles is expected to enhance Global News’ production capabilities and deliver higher-quality content to its audience.
