Canon has recently launched the CJ27ex7.3B IASE T, known as CJ27ex, a new lens designed for broadcast that combines the capabilities of a box lens into a more manageable, portable size suitable for electronic news gathering (ENG) and other mobile broadcasting setups.
This lens is distinguished by its extensive zoom capability and a built-in 2x extender.
Technical Specifications and Zoom Capabilities
The CJ27ex features a remarkable 27x zoom range, starting at 7.3mm and extending up to 197mm. With the inclusion of a 2x extender, the lens can achieve a maximum focal length of 394mm. Despite offering a zoom range typically associated with larger box lenses, the CJ27ex maintains a compact form factor, making it versatile for use on ENG cameras, smaller rigs, and cranes. It is categorized as a UHDxs lens, which represents the highest quality standard in Canon’s lineup.
Innovative Drive Unit: The eXs V
The lens is equipped with the new eXs V drive unit, which controls focus, aperture, and zoom. This unit features a screen and joystick for adjusting settings and includes a USB-C port for easy sharing of configurations between cameras, as well as for firmware updates and accessing maintenance records. Furthermore, the eXs V unit offers a focus breathing compensation function and has a redesigned 20-pin connection that is angled to facilitate the use of the lens with cameras placed on flat surfaces or stabilizers.
Target Audience and Use Cases
The CJ27ex is primarily designed for broadcast environments where high flexibility in camera mobility and field of view is crucial. It is ideal for ENG teams, sports broadcasting, and medium-sized studios looking to leverage high zoom capabilities without the bulk typically associated with such features.
Availability and Market Introduction
Canon plans to release the CJ27ex in August 2024. The lens was first showcased at NAB 2024. Pricing details have not yet been disclosed.
