Canon Introduces Firmware Update for EOS C500 Mark II

Canon has recently announced an imminent firmware update for its EOS C500 Mark II cinema camera, following the release of firmware version 1.1.0.1 a few months prior.

This upcoming update, slated for release later in the month, introduces significant enhancements to the camera’s Cinema RAW Light recording features.

Previously, the EOS C500 Mark II supported 12-bit RAW video recording at a maximum of 30 frames per second (fps), with 10-bit recording available at higher frame rates. The new firmware update expands the camera’s capabilities by adding three additional Cinema RAW Light formats: Light LT, ST, and HQ. These additions enable recording in 12-bit across all frame rates, marking a first for Canon’s Cinema EOS series by offering users four distinct RAW recording options.

Support for Anamorphic Lenses

The update further benefits users by enabling the new RAW formats in conjunction with the camera’s 4:3 and 6:5 sensor crop modes, particularly when using anamorphic lenses. Cinema RAW Light aims to significantly reduce file sizes compared to standard Canon Cinema RAW files, without compromising image quality or the flexibility in grading. The files are approximately one-third to one-fifth the size, making Cinema RAW Light an efficient choice available across all four of Canon’s current Cinema EOS models.

Implications for Future Releases

Canon’s decision to update the EOS C500 Mark II firmware reinforces its position as the flagship cinema camera within the company’s lineup. This move suggests that Canon may not be planning to announce a C500 Mark III model in the near future, as firmware updates of this nature are uncommon when a replacement model is imminent. However, attention has turned to the EOS C300 Mark III, which is nearing its fourth anniversary since its announcement on April 20, 2020, indicating it may soon see a successor.
