Canon’s First Flagship Mirrorless Camera EOS R1 in Development

Canon has revealed that their first flagship mirrorless camera, the EOS R1, is currently in development and is expected to be launched later this year.

Here is a summary of the available information about this upcoming camera.

Recent Camera and Lens Releases

Since the release of the EOS R100 APS-C mirrorless camera a year ago, Canon has not introduced any new cameras. Their latest full-frame camera, the EOS R8, was released in February 2023. Instead, Canon has focused on developing lenses, including the impressive RF24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z.

Announcement of EOS R1 Development

Canon has confirmed the development of the EOS R1, the first flagship camera in their lineup. The company has started to provide details about this new camera. According to Canon, the EOS R1 will “dramatically improve the performance of both still images and video, in comparison to the EOS R3, and meet the high requirements of professionals on the frontlines of various fields including sports, news reporting, and video production.”

The EOS R3, announced in September 2021, offers features such as 6K60P internal RAW video recording, 4K120P, Canon Log 3, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, and Eye Control AF focusing system. The EOS R1 is expected to surpass these capabilities with a newly developed image processor, DIGIC Accelerator, in addition to the existing DIGIC X processor. The camera will also feature a new CMOS image sensor, which, combined with the new image processing system, is expected to enhance resolutions, framerates, and codecs. Canon mentions that the EOS R1 will include an image noise reduction function to further improve image quality.

Autofocus Technology in EOS R1

Canon has not disclosed specific details about the shooting capabilities of the EOS R1 but has provided information on the autofocus technology. The new image processing system, combined with deep learning technology, allows for high-speed and high-accuracy subject recognition. This improvement enhances subject tracking accuracy, making it possible to continuously track a target even if another player passes directly in front of them during team sports events. The AF “Action Priority” function quickly analyzes the subject’s status and recognizes movements, such as shooting a ball, to automatically shift the AF frame and capture decisive moments.

With the Paris 2024 Olympics approaching, it is likely that selected photographers and filmmakers will use the EOS R1 for sports photography during the event. Observers may spot the EOS R1 being used at the Olympics.
