Canon has officially unveiled its flagship EOS R1, which they teased in May, alongside the EOS R5 Mark II.

The EOS R1 boasts two processors, the ability to internally record 6K RAW up to 60p, new autofocus modes, and simultaneous video and stills recording. The R1 will start shipping in November.

New Sensor and Processing Power

The EOS R1 uses a full-frame 24.2MP Back Illuminated Stacked CMOS sensor designed by Canon. This sensor improves image quality, dynamic range, and autofocus performance. Canon claims it has 16 stops of dynamic range. The camera features a DIGIC X processor and an additional DIGIC Accelerator for enhanced capture performance, continuous shooting, and reduced rolling shutter.

Video Capabilities

The EOS R1 can record 6K RAW up to 59.94fps, oversampled 4K up to 59.94fps, and pixel-binned 4K up to 119.88fps. It supports various formats, including 6K DCI RAW and 4K UHD MP4, with options for proxy recording. The camera allows simultaneous video and stills recording in HD resolution.

Autofocus and Stabilization

The R1 features improved tracking accuracy, Action Priority mode for sports, Register People Priority for events, Cross Type AF, and Eye Control AF. It also includes up to 8.5 stops of In-body Image Stabilization, ensuring steady shots even with non-IS lenses.

Design and Connectivity

The EOS R1 has a weather-sealed body with an integrated vertical grip. It offers dual CFexpress Type B card slots, LP-E19 batteries, and various connectivity options, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 6E, and 2.5Gbps Ethernet. The camera supports News Metadata (NewsML-G2 standard) for streamlined workflows in news broadcasting.

Pricing and Availability

The EOS R1 is priced at $6,299 USD (body only) and will be available starting November. It competes with the Sony a1 ($6,498 USD) and Nikon Z9 ($5,496.95 USD).
