Canon has announced the EOS R5 Mark II, a new high-resolution 8K mirrorless camera. This new model features a 45MP BSI full-frame sensor with Dual Pixel Intelligent AF, faster readout speeds, and advanced smart features based on Deep Learning.
It is set to be available in August 2024, priced at $4,299 (approximately €5,200 including VAT in Europe).
Key Features and Improvements
The Canon EOS R5 Mark II boasts a newly developed 45MP full-frame back-illuminated stacked (BSI) Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor. The camera uses Canon’s DIGIC accelerator and DIGIC X image processor to handle data efficiently. Canon claims a 60% faster readout speed compared to the original R5, reducing rolling shutter effects, achieving up to 1/64000 shutter speed, and offering up to 30fps continuous shooting. Additionally, the camera includes IBIS with up to 8.5-stops of stabilization.
Enhanced Autofocus and Intelligent Features
The latest generation of Canon’s AF system, Dual Pixel Intelligent AF, brings significant improvements, such as better tracking, action priority, and the ability to register and prioritize up to 10 people. The eye control AF feature from the EOS R3 has been enhanced with a higher pixel count sensor, a larger eye detection area, and doubled eye movement detection speed.
Advanced Video Capabilities
For filmmakers, the EOS R5 Mark II offers 8K video at up to 60fps in 12-bit raw format internally. The camera also supports 4K video at 120fps with sound and 4K video at 30fps oversampled from 8K. Custom picture profiles include Canon Log 2, Log 3, Canon 709/BT.709 Std., or PQ/HLG. The camera includes professional video shooting aids such as waveform monitor, false color, zebra display, pre-recording, proxy recording, AF subject tracking, tally lamp, and HDR movie mode.
Innovative Features for Dual Shooting and Connectivity
The R5 Mark II introduces dual shooting, enabling high-resolution photos to be taken while recording video, limited to FullHD video. It features an HDMI type A connector for raw video output and supports up to 4 channels of 24-bit audio recording. The camera body is made of lightweight and durable magnesium alloy and offers enhanced connectivity with Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5 Base-T Ethernet.
New Accessories and Battery Details
Canon has introduced three new battery grips for the R5 Mark II: the standard grip, network grip with an Ethernet connector, and cooling grip with an active cooling system and Ethernet connector. The new Canon LP-E6P battery is required for recording 8K raw video internally, maintaining the same capacity as its predecessor but with a higher continuous discharge current.
Price and Availability
The Canon EOS R5 Mark II will be available starting in August 2024. The body-only price is set at $4,299, while the kit with an RF 24-105mm F4L lens will cost €5,399. The new cooling grip will be priced at $399.
