Canon EOS R5 Mark II: 8K Video, 4K 120fps with Sound

Pax: Philip, we know that you’re team Canon. What are your thoughts on Canon announcing the EOS R5 Mark II 8K mirrorless camera slated to be released in August 2024 for the price of $4,299 and around 5200 Euros in Europe?

Philip: Well, I am a Canon shooter. My first digital SLR was a Canon. I’ve had all the 5D series up to the Mark IV. I do have the R5, which is a great camera. I say this is an evolutionary step, not a revolutionary step. One of the biggest gripes people had with the original R5 was its overheating when shooting 8K raw. I think they’ve corrected that issue. There’s always an issue with the 29 minute and 59 second recording limit, partly because of an EU regulation. I think that regulation has changed, so it’s not an issue anymore. It’s a great camera. I understand the price increase from the original $3,600-$3,900 range, so it’s not a significant increase, but it is an increase.

The main issue I’ve always had with that camera, and with any digital SLR, is the rolling shutter effect on the CMOS sensor. They supposedly say that it’s a 60% faster readout, getting rid of that rolling shutter effect. I haven’t been able to test the camera, so I’m not 100% sure if they have corrected it. If they have, that’s fantastic. The addition of several different autofocus features is great. Being able to do 8K 60 is great for sports people. The 30 frames per second capture rate is also impressive. To be quite honest, I just go into 8K raw and do 30 frames per second, then pull the stills from that. It’s close enough to the same thing.

I think it’s a great camera and a step in the right direction. I haven’t decided if I’m going to upgrade yet. I’m still on the fence. There’s some other tech out there I’m waiting to see before I make my move. But for anyone who is a camera shooter and isn’t on the R5, it’s definitely worth the upgrade from the 5D. If you’re already on an R5, you need to think about your use case for the camera, whether it’s mostly stills, a mix of stills and video, or mostly video.

Pax: Awesome. Many thanks to our expert, Philip Grossman. Don’t forget to like and subscribe, and we’ll see you next Monday.
