Carol Fowler has been named the new director of content for WXIA Atlanta, a Tegna NBC affiliate, starting December 11.
In her new role, Fowler will be responsible for the daily operations of the news department and play a key role in shaping the station’s strategy for audience growth. She will be working under the guidance of Kristie Gonzales, the station’s President and General Manager.
Bringing over a quarter-century of journalistic experience, Fowler has held various positions in newsrooms. Since 2019, she has been at the helm of KSDK St. Louis’ content strategy, leading a team of over 90 journalists. Her leadership led the station to win seven RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards in 2022, the most in its region. The station’s series “RACE: Listen, Learn, Live” was shortlisted for the 2023 Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award, focusing on the Asian American Pacific Islander community in St. Louis. This series also earned a 2022 Gracie Award for a special on the experiences of Black women in St. Louis.
Prior to KSDK, Fowler played a pivotal role at the Chicago Sun-Times as the senior vice president of digital news products, spearheading the expansion of the paper’s digital news offerings. She also founded KloboMedia, a Chicago-based social media agency, in 2014.
Fowler’s career also includes leadership roles at two network-owned-and-operated stations in Chicago — WFLD (Fox) and WBBM (CBS) — where she enhanced their investigative and digital teams. Her career in television began as a political reporter and Illinois capitol bureau chief for WCIA in Champaign, Illinois. Fowler then transitioned to Chicago, taking on various roles at WLS (ABC) and WGN-TV, including newscast producer, managing editor, assistant news director, and news director.
Kristie Gonzales expressed excitement about Fowler’s appointment, praising her for leading large market newsrooms to success and her ability to innovate in digital journalism. Gonzales also commended Fowler’s commitment to inclusive journalism, as demonstrated by her team’s award-winning work in St. Louis.
Fowler, originally from Jackson, Mississippi, holds a journalism degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
