CBS Sports to Use 165 Cameras for Super Bowl LVIII, Introducing 1080p and 4K HDR Broadcast

CBS Sports has unveiled its comprehensive production strategy for Super Bowl LVIII, incorporating an impressive array of technology to enhance the viewing experience.

The broadcast will feature a combination of standard CBS Sports coverage, a special presentation by Nickelodeon, and NFL Today broadcasts from both the Las Vegas Strip and Allegiant Stadium, employing a total of 165 cameras.

Record-Breaking Camera Deployment

This year’s Super Bowl will set a new record with 48 cameras capable of super-slow-motion footage. Half of these cameras will also be equipped with 4K zoom extraction capabilities, positioned in various locations from the ceiling to the pylons to capture every critical moment and play.

Innovative Camera Technologies

For the first time, CBS Sports will introduce “doink” cameras, which are small devices placed inside the goal-post uprights. These six 4K cameras will provide unique angles for field goals and extra points, with capabilities for high-resolution zoom and super-slow-motion replays.

Aerial shots will reach new levels with three Skycams, two Flycams, including a “trolley cam,” and three drones operating in and around the stadium and along parts of the Strip, including near the Las Vegas Sphere.

Augmented Reality and Robotics

The production will also utilize 23 AR cameras, distributed among the CBS and Nickelodeon broadcasts and at the Strip set, to add augmented reality graphics to the broadcast. This includes drone and Flycam shots over the Bellagio fountains and a virtual representation of the Las Vegas Strip created with Unreal Engine.

Additional Technological Enhancements
  • Shallow Depth-of-Field Cameras: Five cameras will provide a cinematic portrayal of players on the field.
  • “Red Cat” POV Cameras: This innovative tool will allow for dynamic replay presentations through stabilization, focusing, and time remapping.
  • Techno Movie Bird Crane: A 53-foot crane, typically used in film production, will offer sweeping views of the stadium.
  • Falcon 360 Camera: An immersive camera providing panoramic views of the venue.
  • Wireless RF Cameras: Twelve cameras, including two “line-to-gain” perspectives, will be used for wireless coverage.

Overall, CBS Sports’ production of Super Bowl LVIII will mark the first time the event is presented in 1080p HDR and 4K HDR, ensuring a highly detailed and vivid viewing experience.
