Camera Foundry has introduced a new version of its CineBack module tailored for the Canon EOS R5 C, R5, and R6 cameras.

This module converts mirrorless hybrid cameras into box-style cinema cameras, offering additional mounting points for accessories, a V-mount battery plate, and four D-Tap outputs.

Hybrid Cameras and Cinema Workflows

While modern hybrid mirrorless cameras deliver excellent image quality, their form factor often does not support the workflow required on a film set. Camera cages have traditionally been used to adapt these cameras for cinema use. Recently, pre-assembled modules have emerged as a solution to modify hybrid cameras for cinematic purposes.

NAB 2024 and Previous CineBack Releases

At NAB 2024, Old Fast Glass demonstrated a modification of a FUJIFILM GFX100 II into a “nearly 65mm” cinema camera. Last year, Camera Foundry released the CineBack module for Sony FX3 and FX30 cameras. The latest release expands this concept to Canon EOS R5 C, R5, and R6 models.

Compatibility and Installation

The CineBack module for Canon EOS cameras is compatible with the R5 C, R5, and R6, but it does not fit the EOS R6 Mark II. Compatibility with the EOS R5 Mark II is still under investigation. Users will need either Tilta’s Full Cage for Canon EOS R5 C or SmallRig 2982B cage for installation, as the kit does not include a cage.

Features and Design

The CineBack module sandwiches the camera body and power module between a top and bottom cheese plate. These plates provide additional mounting points while allowing access to the camera’s controls, battery, and card slots. The camera’s LCD must be flipped out, and a screen holder on the left side of the unit supports the LCD either as a side monitor or folded against the module for protection.

The rear power module uses V-mount batteries to extend battery life. It includes a D-Tap splitter with four outputs, capable of powering accessories or the camera itself. A master power switch is included to prevent battery drain, and a hinged door behind the camera body allows for clean cable management.
