CINELUX Develops REDUXA R Focal Reducer for RED Cameras

CINELUX has revealed the REDUXA R focal reducer designed for RED DSMC2 camera systems. The product is currently in a prototype stage, with further revisions planned ahead of the final version expected in February.

The REDUXA R2 uses a 0.71x focal reduction factor, providing a wider field of view when using full-frame lenses and approximately one additional stop of light. The optical design is based on a 5-element, 4-group configuration and focuses on balanced coverage, controlled flares, and consistent image characteristics.

Light gain and sensor performance

The focal reducer provides an effective one-stop light increase. On earlier RED sensors such as Dragon, this supports improved shadow cleanliness and low-light performance. On newer sensors such as Gemini, usable ISO performance is effectively extended.

Mount options

The REDUXA R2 will be available in EF and PL mounts.
The EF version offers full electronic communication with the camera, including in-camera aperture control, supported focus functions, lens data transmission, and full metadata recording into R3D files.
The PL version is fully mechanical and intended for workflows where electronic lens communication is not required.

Camera compatibility

The REDUXA R2 is compatible with most RED DSMC2 camera bodies, excluding RED RAVEN due to its fixed EF mount. Some early DSMC2 DRAGON and early SCARLET-W units may have internal design differences that could affect compatibility. CINELUX is currently evaluating these models.
