CineMilled Launches CineRags: New Diffusion Inserts for Aputure Light Domes

CineMilled, a Los Angeles-based company headed by camera and SteadiCam operator Pedro Guimaraes, SOC, has introduced a new product called CineRags.

This product is designed as an alternative to the diffusion inserts provided by Aputure for their Dome 150 and Dome 2 and 3 light models. The goal of CineRags is to offer Aputure users more options for modifying their lighting setup.

Innovative Collaboration for Cinematography Needs
CineRags were developed in collaboration with a small, family-owned sewing business in Los Angeles. These hand-sewn muslin inserts were created as a response to scenarios where Aputure’s lights, even at their lowest setting of 10%, were too bright for certain scenes. The muslin material used in CineRags is thicker than Aputure’s original diffusion materials, providing a different lighting effect.

Design and Quality Features of CineRags
The muslin used in CineRags has been carefully selected and tested to closely match the muslin typically used by cinematographers in Los Angeles. The design of these inserts includes a covering over the backside of the velcro to prevent exposed edges, ensuring even light reflection. Additionally, the muslin material offers reduced noise in windy conditions. All CineRags fabrics are pre-washed and pre-shrunk for a perfect fit and come with an EZ-Pull tab for easy removal.

Adjusting Light Characteristics with CineRags
CineRags are available in two versions: bleached and unbleached muslin. The unbleached muslin has a yellowish hue, making it ideal for scenes requiring warmer tones and more natural skin colors. CineMilled has tested the color temperature changes with these inserts. The bleached muslin reduces the color temperature by about 350 Kelvin, while the unbleached variant sees a reduction of approximately 1140K, closely matching the industry standard. Compared to Aputure’s original diffusion, which lowers the temperature by about 150K, CineRags offer a more significant change. Additionally, CineRags result in a light loss of about two stops, which is half a stop more than Aputure’s thickest diffusion option.
