In December 2023, CNBC embarked on a complete overhaul of its on-air graphics package and debuted a new look for the first time in over a decade.
In the lead up to the debut, the real-time graphics teams of NBC News at 30 Rock and CNBC at Englewood Cliffs, NJ, worked closely to accomplish the monumental task.
CNBC historically used multiple renderers to drive data and self-serve graphics, with separate teams handling the creation of both. The advantages of consolidating to a single render platform for all real-time graphics became clear, reflecting the goal of streamlining workflows and control room efficiency.
Other major drivers considered were the pooling of talented resources, realizing economies of scale for support and sourcing within the larger NBCU News Group, and to maintain or expand quality while strengthening ease-of-use and time to air.
News production at 30 Rock has leveraged Vizrt as the primary real-time graphics renderer for network, cable, and streaming since 2016. After evaluating Viz Engine’s ability to handle the stresses of CNBC’s data intensive demands, the teams made the decision to launch CNBC’s new look in the Vizrt ecosystem.
Charts, graphs, tickers, banners, bugs, self-serve graphics, and even walls would now originate from the same system.
Having worked with Vizrt since 2016, the NBC News team along with Reality Check Systems built out the initial graphics and Pilot templates, mirroring workflows established at 30 Rock. After completing six weeks of in-house “classroom” training on Viz Artist and Pilot, the CNBC team smoothly began integrating the data backend and building additional graphics and templates for launch.
