DDish, a direct-to-home satellite television network based in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, has successfully implemented a new multichannel playout system developed by PlayBox Neo.
This system facilitates the broadcast of over 150 Mongolian and international channels through Koreasat 5A. It also supports various video on demand services, including NVOD, RVOD, and SVOD.
Technical Enhancements and Future Capabilities
Ariunbold Nasanjargal, the Chief Technical Officer at DDish TV, praised the efficiency and reliability of the PlayBox Neo systems. He highlighted their compatibility with existing production and scheduling workflows and their automation capabilities, which significantly ease the management of multiple channels. The system’s flexibility also allows for the insertion of live-to-air news and last-minute changes to the program lineup. Looking ahead, this upgrade paves the way for the addition of three new HD channels and potential future expansion to 4K UHD broadcasting.
System Components and Features
The installed system includes a dual Channel-in-a-Box (CIAB) server, an additional CIAB license, and a Multi-Backup Manager (MBM). This setup ensures N:M redundancy, enhancing the reliability of the broadcast service. Iulian Ionescu, the Regional Business Development Director at PlayBox Neo, noted that the DDish operators, already familiar with the technology, did not require further training.
About PlayBox Neo Channel-in-a-Box
The Channel-in-a-Box solution from PlayBox Neo offers a comprehensive suite of tools for channel broadcasting, including capabilities for ingest, scheduling, and playout, both in HD and UHD formats. The system allows for both SDI and IP streaming outputs and is equipped with remotely accessible tools for content preparation, quality control, and monitoring.
Role of Multi-Backup Manager
The Multi-Backup Manager enhances system reliability by allowing the assignment of multiple backup systems. For instance, it can manage four backups for twelve on-air channels. It monitors the operational status of CIAB applications and automatically switches to a backup if the primary system fails, ensuring continuous service without manual intervention.
