DJI: RS 4 Gimbals Enhance Videography

DJI has launched the latest models in its compact gimbal lineup, the RS 4 and RS 4 PRO, just ahead of NAB 2024.

These new models carry over the payload capacities of their predecessors but introduce several upgrades including native vertical shooting, enhanced stabilization algorithms, and extended battery life options. The RS 4 PRO also offers additional support for dual external focus/zoom motors.

Historical Context and Innovations

Previously, DJI released the RS 3 and RS 3 Pro in June 2022, which featured automated axis locks, a larger OLED touchscreen, a new gimbal mode switch, and other enhancements. The new RS 4 models maintain many of these features but with substantial internal improvements.

Technical Specifications

The RS 4 has a maximum payload of 3 kg (6.6 lbs), while the PRO version supports up to 4.5 kg (10 lbs). The RS 4 PRO’s motors have received a 20% increase in torque compared to its predecessor. While the RS 4 is constructed from aluminum with a Teflon coating for smoother balancing, the RS 4 PRO continues to use carbon fiber with the same coating. Each model features a 1.8″ OLED touchscreen, second-generation automated axis locks, a fine-tuning knob, a removable battery, a built-in joystick, two NATO rails, and a gimbal mode switch. The PRO model now includes two RSA ports, up from one in the previous model.

New Features

The fourth-generation RS stabilization algorithm introduced in these models aims to provide smoother footage. The gimbals also feature a new joystick mode switch for enhanced control. A key upgrade is the second-generation native vertical shooting capability, which simplifies switching between horizontal and vertical orientations without additional accessories. The RS 4 PRO is compatible with dual focus motors and supports the new Focus Pro LiDAR and Focus Pro Hand Unit.

Accessories

The new DJI RS BG70 high-capacity battery grip can extend the battery life of the RS 4 to up to 29.5 hours and includes a USB Type-C port for powering additional devices. Combo packs for the gimbals come equipped with numerous cables and accessories, including the improved Focus Pro motor.

Pricing and Availability

The DJI RS 4 is currently available for €549, which includes the gimbal, BG21 battery grip, and other essential accessories. The DJI RS 4 PRO is priced at €869, and comes with the BG30 battery grip among other premium accessories. Both models are on sale now, offering advanced features for professional videographers.
