Freefly's Latest Camera, Ember S2.5K, Now Available for Pre-Order

Freefly Systems has recently unveiled the Ember S2.5K at NAB 2024.This camera is a 2.5K version of their previously released high-speed Ember series. It is designed to achieve higher frame rates at lower resolutions than its 5K predecessor.

The Ember S2.5K is housed in the same 850-gram box-style body as the Ember S5K. It maintains the same ports including a full-size HDMI output, USB-C, and RJ45 Ethernet connections. This new model remains compatible with all previously released Ember accessories.

Sensor and Performance

Unlike the 5K model, the S2.5K features a Super35 global shutter sensor with a resolution of 2560×2048 pixels. This adjustment in resolution allows the S2.5K to capture faster speeds, up to 2,277fps at 2.5K and 2,900fps at 2K. By reducing the vertical resolution to 864 pixels, it can even reach up to 3,563fps.

Imaging and Storage

The S2.5K can record in 10-bit ProRes 422 LT format and offers only two gamma curve options: Rec.709 and HLG (Beta). The camera includes a built-in 2.56TB pSLC NVMe SSD for storage, which is also available separately for owners of the S5K model.

Lens Mount and Compatibility

The S2.5K is equipped with an active locking Canon EF mount as standard, which is also available for the S5K upon sending the unit back to Freefly for an upgrade. Following a request from Sony, Freefly ceased production of their E-mount. Mount options from third parties like KipperTie and C7adapters remain available.

Software Updates and Pricing

In conjunction with the new camera, Freefly announced firmware update v2.0 for the Ember S5K, which supports the new Active EF mount and the high-endurance SSD. A new control App v2.0 was also released. The Ember S2.5K is available for pre-order at $24,995, which is $7,000 more than the S5K model, with shipping expected to begin in May.
