Custom Diffusion Filters by Formatt Hitech

The Formatt Hitech Custom Diffusion Filter Kit has been developed for cinematographers to tailor their filtration needs to specific lenses, cameras, or projects.

This kit addresses the challenge of selecting the ideal diffusion filters by focusing on three key aspects: Resolution, Halation, and Contrast.

Contained in the kit are fifteen distinct 4×5.65” filters, each offering different levels of Resolution, Halation, and Contrast. These 2mm thick filters are compatible with standard matte box filter trays, including those with clamping mechanisms like the Bright Tangerine Atom, and can also be used individually in the Firecrest 4×5.65 Superslim 2mm tray.

The choice of 2mm thickness allows for the combination of multiple filters, facilitating experimentation to find the perfect blend for each project. Once the ideal combination is determined, a custom 4mm thick, standard size 4×5.65” filter can be crafted based on this selection. This bespoke filter, which combines up to three 2mm filter characteristics, is typically delivered within six weeks.

Alternatively, the 2mm filters from the set can be used in various combinations as needed. Users also have the option to order custom sets of these 2mm filters.

Each filter in the kit is marked with a code indicating its diffusion properties, and color-coded edges for easy identification. The kit is housed in a special HPRC hard case with foam slots for each filter, designed for scratch-free storage and easy access.

The Resolution filters in the kit use micro-lenses to diffuse light while maintaining sharp focus, aiming to avoid issues like moiré patterns in detailed shots. The Halation filters create a soft glow around light sources, enhancing the appearance of candles or light bulbs, with their large mist particles. The Contrast filters, on the other hand, disperse light with fine mist particles to adjust image contrast, offering either a dramatic or subtle look.
