Freefly Systems, known for their expertise in gimbals, drones, and specialized cameras like the Ember, has released a significant firmware update for their Mōvi models, including the Pro, Carbon, and XL.
This update, named ‘Power Surge,’ enhances the models’ motor strength and camera control capabilities, while also fixing known issues.
Enhancements in Power Management
The highlight of the Power Surge update is its focus on improved power management. It specifically addresses the challenge of motor overheating during shoots, which typically occurs between takes or after complex shots. The update introduces ‘Maniac Mode 2.0,’ which extends the duration motors can operate at peak torque and shortens the cool-down period between takes. This is particularly advantageous for demanding shots like whip pans or when using a heavy camera setup.
Motor Protection and Maniac Mode 2.0
Despite the power boost, motor protection remains a priority. The update smartly manages this by adjusting the current as necessary, reducing the cool-down times more efficiently than previous versions. To take full advantage of Maniac Mode 2.0, Freefly recommends using compatible batteries like the SL4s or TB50s.
Mōvi Carbon Specific Update
The Mōvi Carbon model benefits uniquely from the update, experiencing a 20% increase in peak torque and extended duration at this increased power. This enhancement is automatically active with the new firmware. The update also includes safeguards, such as temperature warnings through the app if a motor stalls for an extended period.
Improved Camera Control
In addition to power management, the update enhances camera control for the Mōvi models. Users can now control Freefly Ember cameras and specific Panasonic models (BGH1 and BS1H) directly from the Mōvi controller. This integration includes a tuning update for these Panasonic cameras to optimize performance. Note that resetting the Mōvi Carbon to default settings is required after the firmware update to ensure compatibility.
Additional Bug Fix and Support
The update also rectifies a previous issue, ensuring that the Mōvi systems resume operation from the same point after a lost connection. Additionally, the forthcoming Ember Carbon will feature support for ND filter control via the Kippertie Revolva mount. This firmware update is a clear indicator of Freefly’s commitment to continuous product enhancement, setting an example for other companies in the industry.
