Fujifilm has made headlines with the announcement of a significant firmware update aimed at enhancing the video capabilities of its X series 5th generation cameras.
This announcement was a part of the X Summit Tokyo 2024, where Fujifilm also introduced the new X100VI camera. The firmware update, slated for release in Spring 2024, will target four of Fujifilm’s popular models: the X-H2, X-H2S, X-T5, and X-S20.
Key Features of the Update
The forthcoming firmware will introduce a red frame indicator during video recording for the X-H2 and X-H2S models, a feature already available in the X-T5 and X-S20. Additionally, all four models will receive touch-tracking subject autofocus capabilities. The update promises to enhance autofocus performance across these cameras by improving the subject detection algorithm, especially when using the electronic shutter. The X-H2S, X-T5, and X-S20 models will also benefit from enhanced tracking performance.
Summer Updates and Additional Enhancements
Looking ahead to the summer, Fujifilm plans to roll out more updates, including the introduction of the Reala Ace film simulation across the aforementioned models, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Fujifilm’s film simulations. Moreover, the X-H2S and X-H2 will gain Frame.io camera to cloud functionality without the need for the FT-XH file transmitter grip.
New Kit Lens and XApp 2.0
Fujifilm announced a replacement for the XF18-55mm F2.8-4 kit lens, which has been a staple for over a decade. The new XF16-50mm F2.8-4.8 lens aims to offer improvements in compactness, versatility, and sharpness. Additionally, February will see the release of XApp 2.0, featuring an updated activity page that allows users to filter images by the camera lens used or film simulation, alongside a new equipment page displaying shutter count and battery status.
Fujifilm’s commitment to updating existing camera models underscores the company’s dedication to its users, ensuring their equipment remains up-to-date and competitive. This strategy may suggest that Fujifilm is focusing on enhancing current models rather than introducing a new generation of cameras in the near future.
