GFX100S II: 102MP Medium Format Camera from FUJIFILM, $4,999

FUJIFILM has introduced the GFX100S II Mirrorless Medium Format Camera, following the original GFX100S.

This new model combines a medium format camera with the form factor of a full-frame mirrorless hybrid.

Key Features and Improvements

The GFX100S II boasts a new 102MP sensor, an improved high-resolution EVF, AI-driven autofocus, and enhanced subject detection. Additionally, it features better in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and an upgraded X-Processor 5 for increased speed, performance, and image quality. It supports 4K video recording at up to 720 Mbps in ProRes and can output Blackmagic RAW via HDMI to a compatible external recording device.

Design and Build

The camera’s design includes a compact, lightweight body weighing 1.94 lb / 883g, making it comparable in weight to many compact full-frame mirrorless cameras. It uses BISHAMON-TEX rubber for improved grip and a dust-proof and drip-proof structure with 60-point sealing for durability. The body also features a mode dial with six custom positions for storing and switching settings quickly.

Sensor and Processor

The GFX100S II utilizes the same 102MP 43.8 x 32.9 mm BSI CMOS sensor and X-Processor 5 image processor as the GFX100 II. This sensor is nearly 1.7 times larger than the 35mm sensors in full-frame cameras.

Video Capabilities

The camera supports DCI and UHD 4K video recording at 4:2:0 10-bit H.265 All-Intra internally. It can record Apple ProRes 4:2:2, 10-bit video at up to 4K/30p over USB-C to an SSD. The maximum bitrate has increased to 720 Mbps, a significant improvement over the previous model. The GFX100S II also supports Blackmagic RAW over HDMI and includes HLG recording for HDR applications. It features a 3.5mm microphone jack and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

External Recording and Connectivity

Users can record photos and videos directly to an external SSD via a USB Type-C cable. The camera includes dual SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-II) card slots and offers HDMI Micro (Type D) and USB-C terminals for enhanced connectivity. Integration with Frame.io Camera to Cloud and Atomos AirGluTM BT streamlines production workflows.

Film Simulation Modes

The GFX100S II offers 20 Film Simulation modes, including the new REALA ACE mode, which provides neutral color reproduction. Other modes include Nostalgic Neg., Provia, Velvia, Astia, Classic Chrome, Classic Neg., Pro Neg. Hi, Pro Neg. Standard, Eterna, Eterna Bleach Bypass, Acros, Monochrome, and Sepia.

Stills Performance

The camera’s sensor supports in-body image stabilization, providing up to 8 stops of camera shake control and enabling the Pixel Shift Multi-Shot mode for creating 400MP composite images. It also offers high-detail single-frame shooting with a 16-bit color depth, improved dynamic range, and a low base sensitivity of ISO 80.

Autofocus and Burst Shooting

The GFX100S II features AI-based subject-detection autofocus for tracking and detecting fast-moving objects. Burst shooting performance has been increased to 7.0 frames per second, making the camera suitable for various genres, including fashion, commercial, landscape, sports, and photojournalism.

Price and Availability

The FUJIFILM GFX100S II will retail for $4,999 USD, making it $1,000 USD less than the original GFX100S at launch. It will be available in June. FUJIFILM continues to reduce the price of medium format cameras, with the original GFX100 costing $9,999 USD at its release.

The new GFX100S II offers impressive specifications, including a large format sensor, ProRes internal recording, and improved EVF. It represents a significant advancement for FUJIFILM’s medium format camera lineup.
