Harmonic announced that Paragould Municipal Utilities in Arkansas has selected Harmonic’s cOS broadband platform to deliver high-speed fiber broadband.

The platform includes Harmonic’s cOS virtualized core software and Pier optical line terminal (OLT) shelf. This selection will facilitate Paragould’s transition from GPON to XGS-PON, providing the community with reliable, symmetric multigigabit connectivity.

Showcase at Fiber Connect 2024

Harmonic will display its cOS broadband platform and network edge devices at Fiber Connect 2024 in Nashville, Tennessee, from July 28-31.

Benefits of Transitioning to XGS-PON Technology

Matthew McFadden, Network Services Manager at Paragould Municipal Utilities, emphasized the benefits of transitioning to XGS-PON technology, which will enhance broadband speeds and improve the internet experience for customers. He highlighted the cost efficiency and scalability of Harmonic’s cOS virtualized core software and Pier OLT shelf. The Pier OLT shelf supports various ONU/ONTs, allowing for an advanced in-home internet experience with third-party WiFi solutions.

Deployment of Harmonic’s Technology

Paragould will deploy Harmonic’s cOS virtualized core software and Pier OLT shelf to increase broadband network speed, capacity, and flexibility. The Pier OLT shelf offers an evolutionary path to XGS-PON while supporting existing GPON ONU/ONTs. With high density, the Pier OLT shelf will expand the serviceable area for fiber broadband, reduce building infrastructure needs, and improve cost efficiencies. Harmonic’s open approach to ONU/ONT selection will prevent vendor lock-in, offer competitive pricing, speed up fiber service deployment, and simplify network evolution.

Harmonic’s Open ONU/ONT Strategy

Jeffrey Glahn, Senior Vice President of Global Sales, Broadband at Harmonic, expressed enthusiasm about working with Paragould, which will soon offer 10G internet services to its entire customer base, a significant upgrade from the previous 1 Gigabit speed. Harmonic’s Open ONU/ONT strategy aims to provide flexibility, reduce costs, and expedite high-speed fiber service delivery and enterprise-class connectivity.
