IMAX Keighley Camera Used on Nolan’s The Odyssey

IMAX has named its new compact and quieter 70mm film camera “Keighley.” The name honors the late IMAX chief quality officer David Keighley and his wife Patricia Keighley, who continues her work as IMAX’s chief quality authority.

The camera is used on Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey. The project becomes the first theatrical release filmed entirely with IMAX 70mm film cameras.

Design focus

The Keighley camera differs from earlier IMAX film systems through reduced operational noise and a smaller physical design. Previous IMAX cameras were limited in dialogue scenes due to sound levels. The updated system allows continuous use across all scene types.

Production context

Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema returns as Nolan’s collaborator on The Odyssey. The cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

IMAX 70mm exhibition demand

IMAX 70mm film screenings for The Odyssey reached near-total sell-outs shortly after ticket sales opened. Availability is limited to a small number of theaters equipped for 15/70 film projection.

Industry background

David Keighley worked with IMAX for more than five decades and supervised post-production for over 500 IMAX films. His role included final approval of IMAX film prints worldwide.

Ongoing IMAX use

The new camera is also used on selected scenes in Dune: Part Three. IMAX continues to expand its large-format film and exhibition footprint globally.
