Kinefinity has introduced a new electronic viewfinder (EVF) called the EAGLE SDI, compatible with any camera featuring an SDI output.

The EVF boasts a 0.7″ 1080p OLED screen, low power consumption, a fanless design, and an adjustable diopter. It will be available for shipping in August 2024, priced at $1,299.

NAB 2024 Presentation and Official Announcement

At the NAB 2024 show in April, Kinefinity presented an 8K camera and a new electronic viewfinder. Although details were scarce at the time, the EAGLE SDI is now officially announced with comprehensive specifications and features.

Technical Specifications

The EAGLE SDI features a 0.7″ Micro-OLED 1080p display supporting 10-bit image processing, with an 8-bit color depth (16 million colors). The EVF includes a built-in diopter adjustable from -6D to +2D, accommodating 600 degrees of myopia to 200 degrees of hyperopia.

It supports 3G SDI and HD SDI connections with 1080p or 1080i video signals at framerates from 23.97 to 60fps. Kinefinity claims the EVF provides a noise-free and zero-latency image. Although there is no proximity sensor, it has an automatic screen-off function to protect the OLED display.

Assist Features and Firmware Updates

The EVF includes assist features like luma waveform, focus peaking, histogram, and false color. Future firmware updates will add vector scope and SDI metadata. While it does not support the import of 3D LUTs, each unit is color-calibrated during production, eliminating the need for further calibration.

RS Trigger and Camera Control

Though the viewfinder cannot control the camera menu, it supports RS triggering (run/stop) via the RS port on the SDI e-viewfinder cord, compatible with ARRI, RED V-RAPTOR XL, Sony VENICE, and Kinefinity cameras. For cameras without an RS port, like RED KOMODO/V-RAPTOR, an additional kit such as the Tilta RED KOMODO camera cage is required.

Physical Specifications and Powering Options

The compact and lightweight body of the EVF measures 105x62x58mm (4.1″x2.4″x2.3″) and weighs 348g (12.2oz). It includes five function buttons, a power switch, and a function knob. Passive heat dissipation is utilized to prevent overheating, as there is no internal fan.

Mounting options include an ARRI rosette mount and Movcam quick-lock mount. The backlit logo at the front serves as a tally light when the R/S triggering is set up. The EVF has a low power consumption of 2.5W and uses a 5-pin LEMO connector for power. A USB Type-C port is available for firmware updates but does not support power delivery.

Pricing and Availability

The Kinefinity EAGLE SDI viewfinder is available for pre-order, with shipping starting on August 5, 2024. Priced at $1,299, it comes in black and cyber colors. An EAGLE SDI kit, including a dual cable, mounting arm, and eyecup cushion, is available for $1,399. Pre-orders placed before August 4, 2024, receive a 10% discount on the EVF and its accessories.
