Kinefinity has released a new Universal Electronic Viewfinder, providing a solution in a market with limited affordable third-party options.
Previously, only a few companies like PortKeys and Zacuto offered similar products. This scarcity may be due to fewer young filmmakers using EVFs.
Technical Specifications
The viewfinder is an upgrade from their KineEVF OLED Viewfinder, continuing to use a proprietary cable that transmits both power and video signal from the camera. It features a 0.7-inch (1.3 cm) 1920 x 1080 Micro OLED panel with a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. Supported by 10-bit processing, it displays a wide range of 16 million colors, offering high color depth and precision.
Optical Features
The EVF is equipped with a premium optical eyepiece that provides high resolution and minimal chromatic aberration, along with a wide field of view. It includes an adjustable built-in diopter ranging from -6D to +2D, accommodating users with varying visual impairments and ensuring a comfortable viewing experience.
Connectivity and Power
The device requires a single 7-24V LEMO power input and supports a 3G-SDI input, consuming only 2.5W of power. It is compatible with most professional cinema cameras, handling various SDI output video signals like 1080p, 1080i, and 1080psf.
Design and Build
Weighing 348 grams (12.2 ounces) and constructed from aluminum, Kinefinity claims the EVF is 40% lighter than its competitors. However, it lacks an HDMI input, which might limit its use with mirrorless hybrid cameras.
Processing and Performance
The viewfinder utilizes a FPGA-based hybrid processing architecture for quick start-up, responsiveness, and ultra-low power consumption. With no internal fan, it operates silently. Its zero-delay feature ensures real-time framing and seamless focusing.
Mounting Options
Kinefinity offers two mounting options: a traditional ARRI Rosette bracket and a more compact, flexible quickplate bracket by Movcam. Both options are designed to enhance compatibility and flexibility with various camera setups.
User Interface
The EVF includes five function buttons, a toggle button, and a function knob, allowing users to customize and control various video assist functions easily.
