Kinefinity MAVO Cameras Get KineOS 8.0

Kinefinity MAVO Cameras Get KineOS 8.0

Kinefinity’s latest firmware update, KineOS 8.0, introduces an uncompressed RAW recording feature for its MAVO Edge and MAVO mark2 camera models.

This new capability, moving away from previous Cinema DNG formats, aims to deliver industry-leading image quality with a high dynamic range for advanced post-production flexibility. Although initially expected to support ProRes RAW, the company has instead opted for a different uncompressed RAW format, details of which remain unspecified. The firmware enables 4K RAW recordings across various formats, including full-frame 4K, Super 35 4K, and Micro Four Thirds 4K, without resorting to line-skipping, thereby preserving the full pixel array.

High Frame Rate Support

With the KineOS 8.0 update, the cameras now support 4K recording at 120 frames per second in RAW format. The data rate for 4K DCI at 25fps is approximately 300MB/s, which means a one-terabyte SSD can store about 60 minutes of footage at this resolution and frame rate.

Improved Post-Production Compatibility

This firmware version improves the post-production workflow by embedding key metadata like DNG shutter speed, ISO, color matrices, and color curves within a scientifically standardized color space. This enhancement is designed to facilitate smoother integration with popular color grading workflows, including the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES).

Enhanced Color Processing

Firmware 8.0 expands the color gamut to Rec.2020 for ProRes encoded footage, improving color consistency across various Kinefinity cameras and enhancing overall color fidelity. It maintains the original KineLOG curve and includes a standard Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) curve, aligning with widely recognized color space standards for easier color grading.

User Interface Upgrades

The updated firmware also introduces a redesigned user interface, which includes customizable user buttons that allow for a more personalized setup. The interface enhancements aim to improve notifications, interactivity, and the consistency of dialogue styles, making the camera more user-friendly.
