The Kipon PL-PL 0.7x focal reducer is designed to shorten the focal length of a lens by 0.7x and increase light transmission by one stop.
This allows users to utilize full-frame lenses on S35 sensor PL mount cameras, creating a wider field of view and increasing the T-stop.
Lens Compatibility and Light Transmission
The adapter supports PL or LPL mount lenses by default and permits light transmission up to a maximum T-Stop of T1.5 on the attached cine lens. The resulting T-Stop can reach up to T1.1, and the image can cover sensor sizes up to a 36mm diagonal.
Optical Design and Functionality
Creating a PL-PL 0.7x focal reducer involves a complex optical design. The innovative design features 13 lenses in 12 groups, ensuring low distortion and high imaging accuracy. The relay optical construction enables the projection of an image from a PL mount lens onto a PL mount camera, a task not achievable with conventional focal reducers. The relay optics maintain the integrity of the PL mount system while enhancing its functionality and versatility.
Image Rotation and Compatibility
Due to the relay design of the Kipon 0.7x PL > PL Adapter, there is a 180° rotation of the image before it is projected onto the camera sensor. Users can correct this by flipping the image in the camera settings, although only a few cameras offer this functionality. The focal reducer can also be adapted for use with Arri LPL, Sony E, Leica M, and other mounts.
Size and Weight Considerations
The complex optical design of the Kipon PL-PL 0.7x focal reducer results in a significant size and weight. It measures 205mm (8.07 inches) in length and weighs 1.8 kg (3.96 lbs).
Historical Context
Ten years ago, Kipon developed a Leica M 0.65x focal reducer. Despite creating several prototypes, it was not put into production due to coverage and mechanical issues.
Pricing and Availability
The Kipon PL-PL 0.7x focal reducer is now available for pre-order at $4,493.60 USD, an 18% discount from the standard retail price of $5,480 USD. As part of the pre-order deal, Kipon includes a replaceable front module for using LPL lenses. Shipping begins on September 10, 2024.
