Kodak Launches Hybrid Super 8 Camera with Digital Capabilities

Kodak is making waves with the launch of its new Super 8 camera, a blend of classic design and modern functionality.

Originally showcased at CES 2016 with an estimated price of $2,000, this camera has now hit the market with a much higher price tag of $5,495, reflecting its status as a limited edition offering.

In a nod to the past, this camera brings to mind the enthusiasm once surrounding the Digital Bolex D16 C Mount Cinema Camera. Though the Bolex aimed to combine digital and Super 16 film elements, it couldn’t sustain its production. However, the Kodak Super 8, with its limited edition label and robust features, seems poised for greater success.

The camera was presented in detail at CES by Photo Gear News, highlighting its comprehensive film development service, including digital scanning and a web platform for film sharing. Though it’s unclear if these services are still part of the package, the possibility of obtaining a digital copy of the film is a tantalizing prospect.

Regarding technical aspects, the camera is a significant upgrade from traditional models. It includes an SD card slot for audio recording and firmware updates, a Micro USB for charging, and HDMI output for external monitors. An onboard sound recorder, external microphone connectivity via a 3.5mm input, and a built-in LCD with live audio meters ensure high-quality audio capture.

The camera features a 4-inch LCD viewfinder that swivels for various shooting angles and offers interactive menu navigation. The exact specifications for the LCD’s resolution and brightness are yet to be disclosed.

A standout feature is its extended gate, allowing for 16:9 widescreen shooting and a larger image capture area compared to standard Super 8 cameras. This enables the film to intercut seamlessly with modern media formats and fit today’s video screens perfectly.

Powered by a 7,200 mAh internal battery, the camera can shoot around 12 cartridges of film on a single charge, with a recharge time of about 3.5 hours.

The KODAK Super 8 Camera’s versatility is further enhanced by its C-mount, which comes with a 6mm 1:1.2 wide-angle lens. The mount is compatible with various C-mount lenses and adapters, offering creative flexibility.

Included with the camera are several accessories: a Pelican case, a wide-angle lens, lens caps and hood, a pistol grip with trigger, a battery, charging cables, a power adapter, a cleaning cloth, and a KODAK TRI-X Black & White Reversal Film. The camera is preloaded with 50 feet of professional motion picture film, with options for different KODAK VISION3 Color Negative or reversal film stocks.
