Krypton OR, a new company in the cinema lens market, is set to release a series of nine rehoused spherical prime lenses, with focal lengths ranging from 21mm to 135mm.
The lenses, created in collaboration with Whitepoint Optics, feature vintage donor glass from the 70s and 80s, modified for a unique feel.
The Krypton OR cinema prime lens lineup includes nine fast focal lengths, with an image circle ranging from 42mm to 60mm, ensuring coverage for full-frame and some Vista Vision formats. The initial lens set includes:
- 21mm T2.9
- 28mm T1.9
- 35mm T2
- 40mm T1.9
- 50mm T1.5
- 57mm T1.3
- 85mm T1.9
- 100mm T2.9
- 135mm T2.6
Additional lenses (14mm T2.9, 24mm T2.9, and 200mm T2.6) are in development. The 24mm lens is currently in production, while the 14mm and 200mm lenses are in the final prototyping stage.
Mount Options and Mechanics
The lenses will come with a PL mount as standard, with LPL and EF mount options available for an additional fee. The lenses feature modern mechanics, including 0.8MOD focus and iris gears, and a 290° focus throw. Most lenses have 16 aperture blades, except for the 21mm and 40mm lenses, which have 14 blades to reduce size.
Physical Characteristics
The length of the lenses ranges from 65mm to 151mm, with a unified front diameter of 110mm for compatibility with matte boxes. The lightest lens is the 40mm, weighing just over 1kg (2.2lbs), and the heaviest is the 135mm, at 2.38kg (5.25lbs). The close-focus capability is significantly improved, with the 21mm and 28mm lenses able to focus as close as 18cm (7in), and the 135mm lens focusing at 1.1m (3.6ft).
Price and Availability
Krypton OR lenses will officially launch in September 2024. The company is currently accepting applications of interest on their website.
