Laowa has recently launched the 10mm f/2.8 Zero-D FF Lens, a notable product for being the first rectilinear 10mm lens for full-frame cameras that also features an f/2.8 aperture.
This lens is unique in Laowa’s range as it offers auto-focus capability, specifically designed for Sony E and Nikon Z camera mounts.
Design and Performance
The lens is lightweight, weighing only 420g (0.93 lbs), which makes it easy to carry for photographers. Laowa claims the lens provides high-quality images with minimal distortion, a common challenge for ultra-wide-angle lenses.
Key Specifications
The lens supports a 77mm filter on the front, which is unusual for a lens with a 10mm focal length, allowing for the use of various filters to enhance photography. It provides a very wide angle of view at 130 degrees, enabling photographers to capture expansive scenes. The lens’s design effectively reduces distortion, ensuring that straight lines remain straight in the images, from the center to the edges.
With a minimum focusing distance of 12cm (4.72 inches), the lens allows for close-up shots with a clear distinction between the subject and the background. This feature is particularly useful for capturing wide-angle macro photographs.
Optical Construction and Features
The lens consists of 15 elements in 9 groups, including two aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion glasses, which are intended to improve image clarity and reduce chromatic aberration. The lens’s aperture mechanism comprises five blades, which can produce a 10-point Sunstar effect when the aperture is narrowed.
Currently, the auto-focus feature is available only for Sony E and Nikon Z mounts, with no support for Canon RF and Leica L mounts.
This latest offering from Laowa aims to provide photographers with a versatile tool for capturing wide-angle shots with excellent image quality and minimal distortion, enhancing the capabilities for panorama and astrophotography without relying on metaphors.
