Rwanda, known for its remarkable recovery and progress, is now making significant strides in technological innovation.

This progress is prominently reflected in 94.3 Royal FM in Kigali, which has recently inaugurated its state-of-the-art broadcasting studio. As the first pure IP radio station in East Africa, Royal FM’s new facility showcases cutting-edge Lawo virtual radio solutions, integrated by Lawo Partner Mediacity Ads Ltd.

The new studio at 94.3 Royal FM represents a significant advancement in broadcasting technology. By eliminating traditional XLR cables, the station now uses a Cisco switch for distributing video and audio signals (AES67) and controlling the entire facility. At the heart of this setup is a Lawo virtual mixer, which seamlessly integrates the studio components. The Multicam video system, automatically responding to microphone signals and controlled by the audio mixer, provides an immersive experience for listeners and viewers.

Efficiency and Flexibility

The AVT IP telephone hybrid enhances the studio’s flexibility and efficiency by managing incoming calls with ease. The studio design minimizes power consumption, reduces cables and equipment, and significantly boosts productivity. Social media platforms like WhatsApp can be integrated, allowing any gaming PC to become a media source. This setup supports remote system control and customized audio experiences for various shows, making advanced production capabilities accessible now and in the future.

Commitment to Innovation

“At Royal FM, we are not just adopting the latest technology but redefining the future of broadcasting in Rwanda,” says Professor Simon Gicharu, Royal FM Group Chairman. The integration of systems like Lawo, MultiCAM, AVT, RAVENNA, and AES67 demonstrates their commitment to excellence and a vision for a more connected and dynamic Rwanda.

Leadership and Vision

“Our mission is to revolutionize radio by integrating advanced technology, ensuring seamless compatibility with new media, reducing costs, and delivering an exceptional experience to our audience,” the station states, acknowledging Fred Martin Kiwalabye, the Head Technical Engineer at Mediacity Ads Ltd., for leading this innovative project.
