German photography manufacturer Leica has introduced their latest camera app for the iPhone, named Leica LUX.
This application enables users to replicate the effects of specific prime lenses, such as the Summilux-M 28 mm F/1.4 ASPH and the Noctilux-M 50 mm F/1.2 ASPH. Additionally, the app includes eleven built-in Leica Looks that emulate famous Leica film presets and color renderings.
Acquisition of Fjorden
In December 2023, Leica acquired the Norwegian company Fjorden, known for developing the Fjorden Grip and iPhone app. This strategic acquisition aimed to help Leica enter the smartphone market. After six months of collaboration, the combined teams have launched the freemium Leica LUX app on the App Store.
Features of Leica LUX
Leica LUX is an iOS-exclusive camera app designed to emulate the capabilities of a Leica camera. Users can choose between an Auto mode and a manual mode for full control over camera settings. The standout feature of the app is the Aperture Mode.
The Aperture Mode allows users to take pictures with the distinctive characteristics of various classic Leica lenses. Currently, the app offers four lens simulations: Summilux-M 28mm f/1.4 ASPH, Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH, Noctilux-M 50 mm f/1.2 ASPH, and Noctilux-M 75 mm f/1.25 ASPH. Leica’s proprietary image processing engine, based on machine learning and computer-aided photography, ensures that these lens simulations replicate the unique look and bokeh effect for which Leica lenses are renowned.
Captured images in Aperture Mode can be saved in JPG, HEIF, or Apple ProRAW formats. Users can then apply one of the eleven color and black-and-white Leica Looks to their photos. These looks utilize Leica’s color science to accurately reproduce color gradations and emulate the appearance of specific Leica cameras.
Pricing and Availability
The Leica LUX app is available for free download from the Apple App Store. The free version includes access to the Automatic Photo mode, Aperture Mode, and the emulation of the Leica Summilux-M 28 mm f/1.4 ASPH lens, along with five Leica Looks. To unlock all features, users can subscribe to LUX Pro for €7.99/$6.99 per month or €79.99/$69.99 per year.
