Leica, the renowned German camera manufacturer, has introduced the SL3, the latest addition to its SL-series of mirrorless cameras.
Despite its external resemblance to the preceding model, the SL2, the SL3 has been reengineered from scratch. It boasts a new 60MP Full-Frame BSI CMOS sensor, enhanced 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS), an updated tilting touchscreen, and an OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF). Additionally, it offers cutting-edge video recording capabilities, including 8K resolution at 30 frames per second (fps) and ProRes 422HQ at Full HD 1080p up to 60fps.
Background of the SL Series
The SL system was first introduced by Leica in 2015, with subsequent models such as the SL2 in 2019 and the video-focused SL2-S in 2020. The SL3 arrives nearly ten years after the series’ inception, continuing the legacy with significant technological upgrades.
Design and Build
The design of the SL3 follows the philosophy of maintaining a minimalist appearance without significant alterations to its exterior, which is constructed from aluminum and magnesium alloy. The camera is designed for durability and resistance to various weather conditions, certified with an IP54 rating. It measures 15.1 x 10.8 x 8.4 cm and weighs 769 grams. Notably, the SL3 features a new control dial and user-customizable buttons, enhancing its versatility and user experience.
Improved Controls and Display
The SL3 introduces a new 3.2″ 2.3m-dot tilting LCD touchscreen and a 5.76m-dot 0.78x OLED EVF for improved viewing and interaction. Leica has relocated the assigned buttons to the right side of the touchscreen for easier access, and the camera now includes a power button instead of a switch.
Connectivity and Storage
Equipped with two memory card slots, the SL3 supports both CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II cards. It offers a USB Type-C port, a full-size HDMI 2.1 port, and 3.5mm inputs for microphones and headphones. The camera also features built-in Bluetooth and WiFi, allowing for easy connection to the Leica FOTOS app for photo editing and firmware updates. The SL3 utilizes a new BP-SCL6 battery, with an optional dual charger and accessories like the HG-SCL7 handgrip and a DC coupler available.
Advanced Sensor and Imaging Capabilities
The SL3 is equipped with a new 60MP full-frame BSI CMOS image sensor, offering selectable resolutions in stills mode and boasting a dynamic range of up to 15 stops. The Maestro IV image processor enables shooting from ISO 50 to 100,000, with speeds up to 15 fps in stills mode.
Video Capabilities
Leica has revamped the user interface for the SL3, featuring distinct color schemes for photo and video modes and a rotating UI for vertical shooting. The camera can internally record DCI 8K and DCI 4K videos, with external recording options available through the HDMI port. A new hybrid autofocus system combines phase detection, contrast detection, and object tracking for improved performance. The inclusion of 5-axis IBIS ensures stable video footage across various shooting conditions.
Pricing and Availability
The Leica SL3 is now available for purchase at a price of $6,995, offering a high-end option for both professional photographers and videographers seeking the latest technology in mirrorless cameras.
