At the recent Inter BEE 2023 event, the Japanese brand Libec, known for their camera support solutions, unveiled the TH-V, a new tripod in their TH series. This entry-level tripod is scheduled for release in March 2024. Koichi Yamaguchi, representing Libec, shared insights about the product.
Libec, which has been in the camera support business for over 70 years and recently expanded its headquarters and factory, showcased this tripod at the InterBEE trade show in Japan. Johnnie, my colleague, was present to learn more about it from Libec.
The TH-V is designed for a broad range of users, including videographers and content creators who work with DSLR, mirrorless cameras, and other handheld video devices. It is affordable, lightweight, and user-friendly.
Key features of the TH-V include a fluid head with a 75mm ball and a flat base, termed a ‘dual head’ by Libec. This design enhances versatility, making the tripod compatible with various equipment like 75mm bowl tripods, flat head photo tripods, skate dollies, and sliders. The head attachment is simple, using a screw-on clamp. The sliding plate is compatible with Manfrotto and Satchler heads and offers a one-touch attach and release mechanism, streamlining the setup process.
This model improves upon its predecessors by offering separate friction control knobs for tilt and pan drag, independent of the locking mechanism. This feature provides smoother movement and consistent speed during panning and tilting, avoiding unstable shots.
Despite its sturdy build, combining robust plastic with aluminum, the TH-V remains lightweight at 3.7kg (8.15 lbs). Libec emphasizes that their expertise in plastic moldings ensures the tripod is both durable and light, offering a cost-effective alternative to carbon tripods.
The TH-V can support up to 5kg, accommodating a wide range of camera sizes. It extends to a maximum height of 163cm, with its lowest setup around 70cm. Libec is still refining the tripod’s features, and additional updates may be announced soon.
